I went to a crazy comic book store today. Of course there were comic books galore, but the guy had LOADS of horror and sci fi stuff as well. It made me so excited to see so much cool stuff in one place.
It also made me remember what a huge geek I am. I came close to getting the "women of Star Trek" tee shirt (Uhura was my hero when I was a kid!) but it was WAY too big. But I have my Princess Leia shirt, so I'm cool for now.
I know I'm not the only genre-entertainment-loving cat person out there, so I thought TCS could use a "Genre" discussion.

Sci fi/horror fans, jump right in!! Comments? Shows? Movies? Books?

My candidates for the best science fiction on television:

1. "The Prisoner" - More of a social critique in the vein of "1984" or "Brave New World", but it incorporated advanced technology and the uses/abuses of it in a futuristic context.

2. "The Outer Limits" - the original 1963-1965 version. Mixed in some Gothic horror/thriller material with the mainstream sci-fi. Never mind the cheesy special effects of the time, very little in television writing anywhere could match the bizarre and sublime genius of Leslie Stevens and Joseph Stefano.

3. "Wild Palms" - a 1993 ABC TV miniseries. One could spend a lifetime unpacking all the metaphors and allusions packed into this very demanding satire of entertainment culture.

I love the cube movies. Cube, Cube 2: Hybercube, and Cube Zero. They are they best. Strangers wake up in a maze of cube shaped rooms, not knowing how, why or when they got there. Each possesses a skill that could contribute to their escape....but there are traps. Awsome movies! Anything Sci-fi or Horror count me in!

I've been reading Si-Fi since I was knee high to a shoer sheep. 40+ years now. The 1st Si Fi I read was a Heinlein Juvie Titled, Have Spacesuit Will Travel. I was probably 6 at the time.

Movies and TV shows? I loved Star Trek, of course (and honestly don't understand why all the theater releases were supposed to be "bad"--I liked them). If it's a sci-fi movie, we'll watch it.

As far as TV, we don't watch TV much--turned off our cable years ago, actually--but I always loved Star Trek*, all versions I ever saw. Plus, even though I've not seen enough episodes to really get into it, Babylon 5, and that one show where the crew is actually in a living ship. It's on the SF channel. Outer Limits and Twilight Zone were really cool. Right now we are using Netflix to watch all the Stargate: SG-1 series. I thought it would be cheesy, but I actually really, really love it. It's one of the few things that can make me look forward to turning on the idiot box.

Don't even get me started on books.

*RIP, Scotty.

I don't follow SciFi too much, but I am a horror movie NUT! You name it, I've probably seen it. I even own the Sleepaway Camp trilogy on DVD

That is one of my favorite reading interest is Scifi books such as Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey and Andre Norton. Also a fan of Star Trek, Star Wars movies and TV shows.

I also like to watch Quantum Leap and Star Gate. but I am not to big a fan of Horror shows.

I agree with DaddyCat on the Prisoner. We have the complete boxed set and have yet to finish it. The bizarre setting is quite scary.

I have to nominate:

BLAKE'S 7

which eventually turns into Blake's zero. But it's still a good show, and I ADORE the retro vinyl costumes!

I love a lot of Sci-Fi shows, old and new. The Twilight Zone and Star Trek are my classic favorites. I really like Andromeda, Farscape, SG-1. I am sure there are others, but none come to mind. It is going to be weird to have 2 actors that were on Farscape move to SG-1.
I was soooo mad when they cancelled Firefly!

Love all Sci-fi - books, movies and TV shows. Started reading Andre Norton at age 7 and went on from there. My favourite book would have to be RAH' s Stranger In A Strange Land. My favourite movie would be Alien and TV show Farscape.

My favorite current authors are David Weber, John Ringo, David Drake, Eric Flint, Harry Turtledove. These guys write mostly Mil-Sci-Fic. Turtledove does mostly Alternate History stuff.

For Sci-Fi fiction I like the "Ender's Game" and series by Orson Scott Card.

I LOVE Sci-Fi movies, especially old ones. I loved "The Time Machine", but the 60s version.

I also watched a wierd one the other night called "Western World". It was made in 1973 and had Josh Brolin in it.

I don't know if it would be considered Sci-Fi, but the "Dark Tower" series by Stephen King must be read by everyone!
