I agree. But I have to say, if you reach your goal of being a veterinarian, and I truly hope you do, I hope you will research this over the upcoming years - including visiting the links I gave. I think you will find them interesting!

Sam...I know this isn't feasible now, but I wonder if she's reacting to one of the ingredients - and if on a homecooked wet diet, she wouldn't be just fine?

Just makes me curious! A lot of canned foods use ingredients that can cause allergic reactions, which is why I don't like many canned cat foods out there, and tend to rave about my favorite brands

And I say that because my thinking was similar to yours. I was interested in finding a good quality dry food and thought wet was more of a treat. After I read up on it I had different thoughts on the subject.

I feed only dry (CA Natural) supplemented with a little bit of organic poultry (I usually just bake some chicken) twice day. Neither of my kitties will go near canned food...go figure!

I feed dry mainly, but I'm slowly working into adding wet food. Right now they get one can (divided in half for both) a week, though I keep breaking down and giving them another can just a few days later. I'm trying to stick with one a week to save on money, but may eventually make it 2 a week. Even with one can a week, they get bored easily.

Pat, when I say wet food I mean canned food, raw meat and cooked meat. She can't handle anything! Even plain cooked shredded chicken.

I feed my kitty Purina One Hairball Control, and she loves it - when I try another food she will eat it if left out, but has unbridled excitement as I pour Purina One in the bowl. I also know people who's kitties will eat nothing but Whiskas. Still other kitties will only eat vet-sold wet food.

Miss Kitty has been pretty snotty about wet food for the last few months. She'll take a few bites, lick away any gravy, but really doesn't eat it enough for me to provide it regularly. If she meows near the bowl or looks like she wants some (by going to the fridge) I will put some down, but she doesn't eat it with near the frequency she used to. She also gets unlimited treats (hairball control as well) so that may be impacting it as well.

To the original question, yes, I think it is fine to just feed dry food. If it's what your kitty wants, it's what she wants. I understand the whole "it's not natural" argument, but another side would present that domestic cats are not wild cats. In the end, I give my kitty the food she enjoys. She likes the dry food, and I like it because she can have free-choice and is responsible enough not to eat herself sick.

Wow, and I was going to suggest just getting a really high-quality tender and juicy piece of chicken for her, because we went through the whole canned-food rigamoroll with Leo (I dont think you can suggest anything I didn't try to get him to both a) eat the food and b) keep the food down) and he still wouldn't eat it, so we settled on cooked chicken...that's so sad for your baby!

At the kitty's beck and call
Our three indoor/outdoor kitties will eat absolutely anything that is put in front of them - wet/dry; cheap/expensive or deli meat. They just don't mind what it is. So they get a good quality but varied diet.

Lily on the other hand was raised on dry food. She eats Hills won't touch Eukanuba and definitely will not touch wet food. It doesn't matter what we've tried she licks it a bit then leaves the rest for her big sisters. We have cooked chicken and all kinds of fish for her - she just isn't interested. Now give her some Grandma Lucy's dried chicken or tuna and she's there! She even goes and finds the bag, drags it off somewhere quiet and spends hours trying to get into it. She does drink a healthy amount of water though and has lots of water in different places around the house.

I am a siamese breeder and I feed all of my cats dry 9 Lives. I feed my kittens Royal Canin Baby Cat 34. All of my cats including the kittens pick Nine Lives, they only like to eat Royal Canin as an alternative. I have given my cats wet before and they always either throw up or have diarrahia. I have tried wet food Nutro, Nine Lives, Friskies, and Fancy Feast and they all have the same result. Even though it makes them sick they love it and fight each other off to get some.
