Okay, I started talking about this in another thread. But for those who LOVE Windows XP and can't wait to see what they come out with next... I'VE SEEN IT!

Windows Vista. Beta version 1, delivered to our office for our tech teams to test. We brought it home and loaded it to our (unused) laptop... and it looks REALLY cool.

I need a reformat BAD (I tend to *abuse* my computer so I do it at least once or twice a year), and since I've been filling up my 18 crappy gigs working on audio/video, we're going to go tomorrow and buy me a nice big hard drive of at least 200. I wanted to put Vista on it but hubby (the huge, VERY intuitive guru of all things Windows) says it's a bit too Beta to trust right now. What do you think? Should I load it and hope it runs all my fancy schmancy editing software?

LOL, I don't know if this makes me a geek or not, but I have no idea what your talking about. I do know that Windows XP is loaded onto my computer at work, but what it does, I have no idea!! LOLOL

I've been thinking, though... that if it bombs it'd only be a day or two worth of after-hours work to bring it back on XP. Since I know I reformat often, I keep everything of importance on an external shared drive anyway. I'd just have to load everything again....

Come on, now... you're 'sposta tell me it's all good!

Oh yeah, for those in the know, Vista is the official name for the Longhorn project. Longhorn even shows up on the boot screen.

Do I have wires coming out of me or what? Why do I know this stuff? I didn't used to be such a geek! I used to be an innocent web designer-in-self-training. I think my husband infected me.

I remember the days when I had my first computer. I was Windows 95. Then I got ahold of a Beta Version of Windows 98, and like a fool I installed it. It screwed everything up, and for some unknown reason it took my sound away. I had to have a professional come in and reformat and re install Windows 95, for Windows 98. I have XP now, and I am looking forward to the new Vista, but I don't think I'll ever install a Beta version on my computer again.

That's the bonus... I live with a professional. Not only that, but I'm friends with a guy who once worked for Microsoft, and even helped design the MS Messenger. I can reformat and reinstall Windows myself, done it dozens of times (if you knew how simple it really was you wouldn't pay anybody to do it!). My hubby knows so much more than any repair guy I've seen. In fact, at work (several thousand employees), he's the guy the bosses go to if something needs fixing. I should respect his advice to leave it alone for now and just play with it on the laptop... but the new version of IE alone makes me want to at least play with it!!!

Gawd, could I GET more geeky?

Oh yeah... and your first PC had Windows 95?
You make me feel old. I was learning basic when all we had to work with was DOS.

My first "PC" (one that wasn't plugged into a TV) was a Tandy 1000. It had some kind of menu system, but still no mouse required or even available. Mice were cool, "extra" features like game pads are now. And I thought Windows 3."X" was such an upgrade!!!

Either uniusntall Win XP and install the beta ver of Vista or wait until the full release is avail. Or if you have another computer, you could install it there.

I've been waiting for the new windows for 2 years. I don't really care what OS I use, I'm just tired of the way XP looks and want something new. I love new.

If you just want the look, there are themes for WindowBlinds and ThemeXP that look just like it. I'm tempted, but I want to wait for the real thing so that when I get it, I won't get bored with it sooner.

If you have access to it & live with a pro, what the heck! Live dangerously!
On the plus side, you'll be way ahead of alot of others before it's readily available..
Think of it as another learning experience, no matter what happens.
(I kinda wish my hubby was a guru, I'd be such a monster)

Well, we got the big fat 200gb hard drive. Loaded XP (yes, I went with what I "know"
), and suddenly my ethernet went poop. It was driving me up a wall for several hours so I finally gave up and handed the project over to El Hubbino.

GRRRR. Once we get that fixed we have to figure out how to make it accept the large drive. It only wants to take 137gb of it (but really, why would I whine at that since I did have only 20... I just want the danged ethernet fixed so I can get back on the network/internet). So, for now, I'll have to use his PC while he's behind me at my desk beating mine with a crowbar. (or at least that's what I want to do with it!)

EDIT: Huh? crap... he's got a login TOO!!!! I thought I was logged in as me!

We did it! Well, he did it. Had to completely start over with the Windows install, but I'm back online and all my gigs are in place.

K, so yeah... I still have a lot of time ahead of me installing all my software, but at least everything works... and I have plenty of room to store... photos of my kits!!!

For now, I think I'm off to bed... yeah, it's 11pm on Saturday... am I old or what?
