Okay.....so my mother has devoted a good portion of the year to get a teaching job (Rather than being a teacher's aid) at the school where she works. She went back and took college courses, and was really excited to get this new job. Well, she did her offical interveiw, and the principal really wanted her for the job, since she already new the staff and the special ed kids she would be teaching. But personel office at the school district kept on making up lies for why the school could not hire her, to try to get my mom to apply at another school. Well, my mom would research their 'excuse' for not letting her be hired, find out it's a lie, then come back to personel, who already made up another excuse. Well, the personel went and hired another, less experianced techer for the position my mother wanted! She really needed this job, so she went back to personel, because they told her earlier that day that the job at the other school was still open and they wanted her. Turns out personel filled that spot days ago, and just lead her to beleive she had a chance for this job. Now she is an unemployed single mom of four kids going through a divorce, not to mention she has a new car to pay off. Luckily, mother is not one to take things sitting down, she's at the lawyer's office right now.

Puerto Rico... land of rice and beans.
One question: Are you sure there are no political reasons in play? (i.e. they were trying to reserve the position for a 'party member'). That is very common in my area... Once a particular political party achieves control of the governor's office in the elections, and thus the Department of Education, they usually will start trying to make sure only the people who helped the local political party win are the ones who get a good post, be it teaching, or be it at the regional offices of the Department. Practices often include stuff as sleazy as sending most of the vacancy notices without the zip code so it arrives late. Its a lot harder getting a teaching job if you are not of political contacts because then you have to be of very good merits. For the only reason my mom got tenure as a school counselor, being of the independence party, while the anexionist NPP was in power, was because of a massive lame duck run they did in 1999 of giving out tenure to virtually everyone who was appointed during the past 7 years of government, in other words all the party members and the non party members who got in by having too good merits to legally ignore (including my mom).

The reason I am saying this: If such is the case, (or if its for another discrimination reason) you have VERY good lawsuit material, through which she can get her job, and indeminities for the time she didn't work. It has happened.

We're still questioning the motives. It is definately possible though.

As the mother of a daughter who was in Special. Ed., I feel badly not only for your mom but for her students as well. Most of the kids in Special Ed. need structure & routine; they bond with their aides, it can be very disruptive & distressing to lose her. Often, the aide is the person most involved in the actual one-on-one with the student; the teacher is more of the director. This shows that the school district's HR is either political/selfish
or downright clueless
The county jobs around here are often pretty political too! For some reason, the court often employs the spouses or relatives of the cops or other county officials....I hope that your mom gets help from her lawyer!! As for a job, since she is good with Special Ed. kids, I'm sure that she'd be great waiting tables; that's what I did - waited tables at night so I could get my sp. needs daughter to school, pick her up, help with homework, have dinner with the family AND make all the appointments, exams, etc. which are always in the day. I would either work a part-time, very flexible day job or I was volunteering as an aide in my daughter's class. The restaurant job paid extremely well, at least twice of what I made doing office work, often 3X!
These are indeed dark days for your mom and I am so glad that she has you there for her! I'm sure that the divorce is hard for you kids, too. Well, they say that the darkest hour is before dawn; I'm hoping that life smiles upon you all very, very soon!

Re special ed - we have and very much support inclusion in our school system so there are no spec ed students per se. It is a wonderful experience thus far!

I hope your mom gets a job!! So sorry to hear about her situation - sounds like politics of some kind at work, pun intended!

Good news! My mom was offered a job at another school! she was the only applicant. She's happy to get a job, but it will still cause some problems with the special ed kids and their parents she was forced to leave behind.
