My last exam was the first one with the plastic thingies - much better than the cold metal ones!

But do you know the sad thing is, one of my best friends just told me yesterday that she hasn't been for one for over 20 years!

I can't even talk any sense into her!
Trust me, with the trouble my mom has been having the past few days (had a rather large polyp removed, almost had to have an emergency hysterectomy) its not worth it to neglect your, um, female health!

Esp. if she's over 40 she REALLY needs to get a mammogram yearly! I have had too many friends who have lost mothers, grandmothers to breast cancer.

Tell her if she goes to the gyno you'll take her out to a fancy dinner once a year on the day of her annual! Or maybe buy her a nice bottle of perfume or something to reward her for being good!

Some people are just afraid of the doctor--I myself am a few months overdue for my dental cleaning and need to just bite the bullet and schedule an appt.!

I've never had anything but a female gyno, either. But if hell froze over and I did have a male gyno, he'd better have a female nurse in the room or I'd file a complaint and never go back

Funny you guys, but my present gyno doens't have anyone in with him........Jerry came in a few times when I went to him at first......I have a terrible fear of doctors and Jerry went with me for moral support. But other than that, it's just him and me. If I felt the least bit threatened in any way, you bet I'd say something, but he is very kind and the most gentle gyno I've ever been too..........still, for his own protection, he should have someone in there.....

It is AGAINST THE LAW for there not to be a female nurse present if your OB/GYN is not a female herself. Hopefully someone has pointed this out by now, sorry I didn't take time to read the whole thread...

Now, if they could only do something about those cold metal stirrups...
Every place I have ever been has nicely padded stirrup covers : ) Also there is usually something to read plastered on the ceiling LOL That always cracks me up. Usually men-bashing jokes hehe

Oh yeah, and my current doc keeps the speculums in a warmer, which is very nice : ) The most embarrasing moment was when he said he couldn't see and he asked the nurse for an EXTRA LONG speculum. At least he didn't say Extra large !!!

I can empathize...I was in for a biopsy a couple weeks ago and my doc (a female) couldn't do it. She kept going on about how she was having trouble because I was so LONG and narrow. It was SO embarrassing.

Not in every state. Most male doctors insist upon a female attendant, to protect THEMSELVES from unfounded accusations. Until I left home, my mother was in the room. After that, there was always a nurse or medical assistant there.

Back in my medical assistant days, NONE of the doctors that I worked for would even consider examining a woman, without another female present.

Here... or There... Hmmm
When my gyno was a man there was always a nurse present. Now that my Gyno is a women, there is still a nurse in the room the entire time!!! Never had any problems with anything. Also, was told if you have a normal PAP for three consecutive years that you shouldn't actually get a PAP every year like most places make you do especially if you are on birth control. I am finally on a 3 year turn around!! whoo hoo!!!

my gyno is this little old guy. He asks you if you want the nurse present or not. Which I think is a nice policy. But my gyno doesn't creep me out or anything, my family doctor creeps me out more, that is why I go to a gyno for all my female exams.

When I was in HS, my mom tried to get me to go to our GP, a man, whose children went to school with me!!!! Too wierd I told her, take me to a FEMALE gyn.

I've always seen at least athletic socks on the stirrups, and I"ve had the plastic speculum a couple times, much improved.

When my ex-hub went to the ER for some *ahem* male troubles, he had a female GP attending him. For some reason, he got bashful on me, and didn't want me in the exam room. Doc told him it would be better and faster, then she wouldn't have to track down a nurse to witness. Poor hubby.

I've always had my GP do it, but now that we're thinking about trying to get pregnant, last time I found an OB/GYN. She was really nice, and I like her a lot, but I'm laying there with my butt practically hanging off the edge and various, um, instruments being poked into me, and she asks me how I like living in Kansas City, when I moved here, how I met my husband ... Not an odd conversation in and of itself, but in context it was quite strange.

As to the other, sometimes my GPs had a nurse present and sometimes not. I don't really care. I'm sure that even if I were male, after seeing a hundred cervixes a week, female genitalia would start to look like the least sexy thing on the planet.

WARNING: POSSIBLE TMI BELOW (Not really, though. This is good info to have.)

If it makes you feel any better, the location of your cervix moves up and down during your cycle. It's pretty high around the time you ovulate and can be difficult to reach. So, you're probably normal.

I've been going to the same Gyno since I became pregnant (9 yrs ago). I trust him implicitly, but of course there has to be a nurse present. Kind of a law I guess.

I'm not weirded out in the least during those visits with the Spread Doctor... I was back before I gave birth, but after childbirth? ... people coming into your room while you're wide open and nurses feeling all over God's creation... why be weirded out anymore.

My mother's said the same thing about when she was pregnant. She's sure they even pulled a few extra people out of the waiting room or off the street to come have a look.
