Even people will "regular" names can run into difficulties!

My full name is Alexandra - everyone calls me Alex. When I was a child I was rushed to the infectious diseases hospital with suspected meningitis. The hospital had received word that I was coming and had reserved a bed for me.... in the boys ward!!!!!!! As a 9 year old child I was mortified

On reflection, it might also have been kinder to name my sweet furgirl Charley something else

Cool! It was my dad's mother's name (yes, my grandmother who had 15 children and some weird names - Alberta, Cynthia, Inga and Daphne for the girls, Hyle, Leaman, Abner, Hollis (my dad) and the others got more "regular" names, and my mom's family of 10 had Dovey, Mildred, Viney, Marina to name a few.

Alberta is my mother's name.
She's fine with it, as long as no one tries to shorten.
Her most hated short versions are Al, Bert and Bertie.

Awww, I love the name Olivia!

But I live in a neighborhood where the well-heeled tend to see how unusual they can get with names before going overboard. Some, unfortunately, do. But a lot of the kids I babysit for have very nice unusual/old-fashioned names. To name a few, here are some of the good, the bad and the ugly (you can decide for yourself): Felicity, Frances, Eliza, Sarie, Oliver, Beatrice, Marjorie (the girl goes by Jorie), Anika, Anya, a boy named Robin, Edmund, etc.

I have a problem with the spelling and the pronounciation of my name ALL the time! It's Alycia Rina and it gets messed up beyond comprehenshion!

But I must admit, I myself also gave my sons unusual names, but they arent completely out there.. Justice, and Deacon.....and they get messed up too!

I had to revive this thread because I was chatting with my cousin the other day and she told me the funniest thing....

She has a colleague (primary school teacher) who just got married and whose new surname is Spack. Mrs Spack. OMG, and she's a PRIMARY school teacher!!! The children are going to have a field day...

For the longest time, I would tell anyone who would listen that I was going to name my daughter Gemini. I've obviously grown up..

I've always liked my name (Shannon), and I don't know many others with it, although it isn't uncommon. I went through a short time when i spelled it with a "y" in junior high. My parents picked it because it was the name of a place they went horseback riding a lot.

I tutor kids with weird names. I kinda like some of them though. Asher (boy), Keerthi (girl), Meaghanne (i think her parents were trying to make Megan as long as possible), Rusty (boy).. just to name a few.

My favorite boy name is Conor. It's the name of my favorite singer/lyricist, Conor Oberst. The man is a genius. I also love the name Jake, it's my brother's name. My sister, Tanya, got the different name in the family.

It's an Australianism for `spastic'....i.e. `that boy is such a spack'. I haven't said it since I was about 8 years old and realised how mean it was, but that is just the age group this lady teaches.

And even if you wouldn't say it, you would still shake your head in disbelief when you heard it!

Movin' on up!
My niece's baby is due Feb. 13 and the baby's father wants to name it Vashon (sp?). Misty says no way.

No one can beat my great-grandmother, for odd names. She named my grandmother Myrtice Jewell (Granny always went by Jewell). I had great-aunts Effie and Odessa (Dess) and a great-uncle Horace. Great-grandmother also had a set of fraternal twins, named Kotez and Inez. Granny always said, "No wonder they died in infancy - that poor little boy would have never lived down that name."

There is an oral surgeon in my area named Dr. Moeller. Pronounced Molar! I dont like all the names like Tieisha. I know they are ethnic but they are so hard to pronounce. And moms and dads get in a huff if you say them wrong. I also have a customer with the last name Imamaura. I have asked him a thousand times to pronounce it but I can't remember!
I like Emily Elizabeth.

My little sister's name is Reagan Grace. At first I thought Reagan was a little bold for a little girl but it suits her perfectly, especially with her middle name being Grace, it's a good balance
My grandpa was telling me about how when he would deliver babies he mentioned something about pushing the placenta out too. And wouldn't you be damned, the woman named her kid placenta!

When I was a teenager, I babysat a boy named Tierney. I always disliked it and thought it sounded like an awfully girly name for a boy. Blech

A friend of my mom and I just had twins several months ago, and named the girl River.. I think it's kind of pretty, but when I think about it.. it is a little strange.

OMG I can't believe I managed to read this whole thread! So much for doing the houswork today!
Reading through this I've noticed some funny doctor's names - some I've come across at work are Dr Hands (cardiologist) Dr Snowball and my fave - my gynaecologist Dr Love. Fabulous!
There's a doctor in town called Dr Pus. No, he's not a dermatologist!
We got married by Reverend Love. Everyone thought that was just perfect!

I love a lot of the Celtic names too - as long as people can pronounce them. I don't think anyone has the right to get huffy if they give their kid an unusual name with weird spelling and people can't pronounce it.
