Reading through this I've noticed some funny doctor's names - some I've come across at work are Dr Hands (cardiologist) Dr Snowball and my fave - my gynaecologist Dr Love. Fabulous!

But we've also had some funny patient's surnames like Dick, Junk, Roots, Germs and Apenis - I'm not kidding. The worst one I ever saw was when I was working as a travel agent - surname Khuntish. Now that is bad.

A lady who works in the next suites to ours has a grand-daughter called Honey, and my best friend's friend named their daughter Beige. As my best friend likes to say, `Not white, not off-white, not cream, but Beige'. We've also got Teighe , Jethro and Diesel out of people we know.

I remember Charlie Sheen said when they named their daughter `Sam' - `we wanted her to have a normal name, can you imagine her growing up as Binoculars Sheen?' I thought that was a really cool thing to say...

I always wanted my children to have Celtic names because they are SO pretty - things like Aslyn and Ailish and Lliadan. But I don't think I would do it because the poor things really would suffer.

But I had enough trouble with `Sarah' growing up so I guess you never can win, can you??!!

I took African- American history at college and my professor said something to the effect that African-American's today have been using unique names because they didn't want to be named after the "white" culuture. What she was trying to say , or what I am trying to say that she was saying that most african-americans felt why should they use names that was imposed upon them by slave masters years ago.
I really didn't see a difference in names in N.Y.C. there were some different names, but they weren't too strange. I married a man from Honduras and learned Spanish names( my kids are Chloe, and Javier), when I moved to Louisiana I began to have trouble because some of the kids have wierd names, like Mananukia( I still can't say it) , then there are people who name there kids after famous people or things like: Lincoln, Lexus, Monet, Mercedes. My daughter would come home and tell me some names and I would go wow.
I tried to give my kids names that where unique, but not out there, because I hate my name it is so plain!

Several have mentioned having their name shortened. I was given a short, one syllable name to avoid that and have had people think it was short for Jane, Janet, Janice, etc. One teacher took forever to accept this!

My Dad's official first name was Junior. He was to be named for his dad (Cornelius - bad enough) but the doctor was in a hurry to get back to a hot card game and didn't register the birth for a couple of days and put down Junior. sheesh!

Try going through some census records from the 1800s. Some pretty interesting names. Have you heard of Vashti? I recently found out it is a biblical name.

I have a dear friend whose legal first name is Larry - his parents figured Lawrence would be shortened to that anyway, so they cut out the middle man
He still gets junk mail addressed to Lawrence, tho

I also know someone named "shy-theed" whose spelling is sh*thead. It is crazy to think that more than one parent actually put a child through that...

I've also heard f someone named Peter Tickle.

People always think my husband's name is a nickname. They think "Shy" is short for Cheyanne. No, it's Shy....just Shy. He got teased a lot when he was a kid but as he got older, the ladies loved it. I thought it was neat.

My sister knew a brother and sister - Cheryl and George. Yes, cheryl was the guy and George was the girl. Apparently Mom and Dad KNEW that the first child would be a boy and therefore named George - but the girl was born first and they gave her the name anyway.

I love those Celtic names. I was a pre-school teacher for years so I saw a lot of strange names.

The coolest names belonged to an Irish brother and sister. His name was Eoin (Owen) and her name was Niamh (neeve).

Some of the stranger ones were Jumanne (kinda like that movie Jumanji, but not quite), Ce'Jada, Hudson (a little girl), Destinae (destiny - bad enough, but then they spelled it weird), and some that I've apparently chosen to block out.

Who are we to judge others? For my fellow Americans, we do live in America where we do have choices and freedoms. I give a big "way to go" to everyone, black or white, who doesn't worry about what "others might think" and give their child a unique name that is special to them.

My roommate in college wanted to name her daughter Electra Finesse. Luckily, she changed her mind, or her husband said no way, so their daughter is Hayley.

We have a student named Yatzee coming into the 6th grade this year.

I have noticed that Cubans come up with some really long, difficult names. Yarisleidys comes to mind. Hispanic people alos hyphenate, using their mother's and father's family names.

BTW, remember Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa?

Ok I had to resurrect this because today I heard the best of all...

We had a different anaesthetist fill in for us this morning and his name is...wait for it...

Dr Doctor.

I am not joking - brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
