My step-sister named her kid JeNaya - she will proudly tell anyone who inquires that she got the name from one of those daytime talk shows where guests appear in order to test several different men to find out which one is the father of their children.
She is knocked up again and plans to name this one MaKenna.

My mom works at home and I heard her talking to a customer and her name was Candida. After she got off the phone I asked what the name was just for sure. Who in their right mind would name their kid the same as a yeast infection.

I don't even think you should name your pet stupid names. When I got Emmett my mom suggested "butterscotch" I was like, "he's a cat not an ice cream flavour"

There is a salon here whose owner is named Candida. I took her my resume' and she was so nasty that I did not mind bursting into hysterical laughter when she told me her name in a really snotty tone of voice after taking my resume' with 2 fingers like she was picking up a turd. I guess she won't be calling me.
Some people deserve their dumb names.

I work for Revenue Canada and a lot of tax returns pass my desk. Some of those names are just terrible. I remember one guy his name was Prince Nurse. I wouldn't want that name for the rest of my life.

I just remembered a book I read years ago. Featured odd names. The one I recall now was a woman named Tarantula.

Since I see so many kids of all ages in my pratice, I have seen my share of different names. I am not certain I like the idea of terming them "dumb" tho - it seems demeaning somehow and what is dumb to us may seem great to others. I never watch soap operas but I can always tell who ppl who watch them like - I just look at the names. I even wondered about the wisdom of someone naming their child after a star like Elvis but then Elvis Stoyco performed his magic on ice and it seemed like a fine name. And look at Picabo Street - I think while some might say her hippie parents gave her a too sixties name, it is one that really works for her and sets her apart.

That said, I think children deserve wonderful, intelligent sounding names. But I hate to judge others for their own process of naming.

it's pretty common here too but i just don't like it too much, i have met a lot of aweful people who name their daughter crystal and it put me off.

i'm the same with my cats, i won't give them names like spot, patches, fluffy, smokey, sooty etc, i give them people names, unusual people names but still, they also all have at least two names.

bonnie's full name is bonnie esther migonette, pandy's is pandora jessamina and anassa is anassa sui

I see alot of names in my job. One of my coworkers collects weird names. She writes it down on a list. We all add to the list. My favorite 'bad' names are. Inert and Severina. Thats like some thing for the Adams Family. Strange but true

there is nothing wrong with a unusual name but when you think calling your daughter tigerlilly is okay something is just wrong.

my best friend recently called her daughter crystal, i nearly died when she told me, why couldn't she have called the poor girl rebecca or something
That's funny.
I would NEVER consider naming my daughter Crystal because I've heard it too much, and to me it just sounds like a variation of the too-common-IMO Christine. And Hazel, as others have mentioned, is a name that in the US fits into the "lovely old-fashioned" category.

Whatever happened to Jennifer and Samantha and Mark and Tom? There are none, NONE of those in my son's school, and our school district is primarily Caucasian.
It's almost as if everyone is trying to make their kid stand out JUST for their name....whatever happened to making a child stand out for other reasons, like academics, or doing something great for their community?
I see your point, but I do love slightly different names. I even like "Apple" (Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter's name) now. I thought it was buckets of stupid at first, but it's growing on me. And I'm sure your school has its "Mark," it's just something like Connor or Dylan now. That's just typical name shift. In the early part of the twentieth century, for instance, it was apparently quite popular to name your girl Evelyn. I got stuck with that name 33 years ago, and the day I meet someone else with that name who hasn't passed retirement age yet is the day I fall over in shock.

Try looking at it this way: giving children distinctive names can also be a way of telling those children that THEY are expected to be distinctive, to imbue their names with meaning.

Well, one of my close friends named her first daughter Azaria (ah-zarr-ee-ah), and her second daughter, whom she gave birth to at 1:56 am on Saturday, Aug. 13th (I'm an aunite, again!!!
), she named her Zirka (zeer-ka). How's that for strange??

Don't feel too bad Maverick. I plan on naming my children after family members that have passed. I like older names.

Boys-

Samuel Estman (That covers three of my Great Grandfathers.)
Edward deForest (Grandfather on Father's side first name. Grandfather on Mother's side middlename.)

Girls-
Joyce-ann Kye - (A combination of my Mother's name, my first boss who was a mentor and my Cousin's names.)
Kezziah Opal - (A great grandmother and grandmother.)

I also love the name Emma but it is so popular now that it's kind of turned me off. I have no desire for my child to be one of many Emma's in her school class.

And I'm a big enough dork that if I could work Skywalker into a name I would.
But I would use it as a middle name, I can't imagine saddling some poor child with that as a first name.

Oh and I adore the name Everett, infact I may forgo naming my child Samuel Estman for Samuel Everett oro Everett Samuel. I just think that's a beautiful name.

well, i'm not as bad as bf in some respects.

i don't think that 'Maverick' would work well for a child as well as a cat! lol

I love the way all those (your) names have meaning to them.
