I wouldn't exactly say my pics are the scariest movies, but these are the ones I have seen that make my list

Favoriate Hauntings : The Shining (probaby one of the few films that told original story well); The Sixth Sense

Favorite Slasher movies : Halloween; Psycho; Nightmare on Elm Street

Favorite Vampire movies : Lost Boys ; Nosferatu; Interview with a Vampire

Favorite "Kids Gone Mad" movies: The Village of the Damned (also sci-fi) ; The Bad Seed; The Omen

Favorite Sci-Fi horror: Alien; The Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Oh yeah, The Shining is right up there. The original one with Jack Nicholson now, not any of those crummy remakes.

I also put in a vote for the ORIGINAL War of the Worlds. That movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I saw the new one with Tom Cruise, and it was good, but not anywhere near as scary. Sometimes you can actually accomplish more by showing less...

I really liked The Grudge and The Saw. I don't really care for the bloody movies. The Saw was bloody but the scare factor at the end was wicked. I like the ones that keep you on the edge of your seat.

I'd have to say that "The Cell" was the scariest movie I've ever seen, athough I LOVED "Saw"...it had SO many twists!!! Those phschological thrillers just make me squirm!

For thrills and chills without relying on special effects, "The Haunting" (the original, not the overblown remake) and "The Changeling" can't be beat.

OK....
When I saw this movie I lived out in the country down a long wooded lane right by the river bank. My husband had seen it and said it was really dumb, and he was out for the night , so I watched it all alone at 1am.....It took me 3 years to get over it...especially when I had to go find lambs that were born out in the feilds in the middle of the night......

It was the "Blair Witch Project"

Okay, this probably isn't going to make most people's scary movie lists, as I don't WATCH scary movies. I sorta saw this one by accident, my sister brought it and she and my mom were watching it and I got sucked in.

The Ghost and the Darkness.

Walking back up to my mobile home up the hill from my mom's house in the dark after that I had to keep telling myself "There are no lions in Cook Springs, there are no lions in Cook Springs ... "

I LOVE LOVE LOVE scarey movies. Being scared makes me feel so alive lol.

I loved SAW. That movie blew my mind. I was so shocked with the ending. I also really enjoyed the Sixth Sence... now I hate these next two movies but they creeped me out so bad that I have to list them as good: The Grudge, The Ring. I will NEVER EVER watch either of those movies again because I had bad dreams.

Anything that's a subtle mind thrilled is great in my book as well.

It freaked me out, too! That was the best one they made, by far!
I've seen alot of zombie movies, but "Night of the Living Dead" will always be the best. When I was a kid, it freaked me out for weeks!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre-timeless classic!
Other Good cult classics-
*The Hills Have Eyes
*Last House On the Left
*Whatever Happened to BabyJane?
My recent favorite is "28 days Later"-it freaked me out because I am very interested in the whole pandemic/slatewiper virus thing & you never know what they are cooking up these days. Scary & well done.
Blair Witch Project was great with it's simplicity. The pulled teeth thing freaked me out, plus that house at the end. Abandoned houses scare me.

The new scary movies just aren't the same..sometimes they seem too hard to follow. Like they are trying too hard, getting away from a good, simple scary story, focusing too much on fake-ey computer generated effects. If I wanted to look at fake, I would watch the old black & whites, which are better, anyway. Story wise.
