K, so another work rant, but I gotta get this off my chest because I was just plagued with it all day long. It just got under my skin and I just wanted to go home all day!

My direct supervisor is so green... she was promoted to that position four or five years ago and she had very little experience doing the job (the job of the people she would be supervising, promoted from another dept), and no supervisory experience.

She's calmed down a lot in the past year, has been sent to several management courses and supervising training. Word has it that several folks quit before they could correct the problem with her virtually harrassing her employees about the simplest things right out in front of everyone.

I've worked under her for a year and never had any complaints, but then she respected my opinion (I knew the stuff better and taught her things all the time). Now, I don't know what's gotten into her but she's really ticked me off both yesterday and today. It's like she's regressed. Or has decided I'm an idiot. Or both.

Yesterday she accosted me about something and was so defensive I didn't even properly get a chance to convey the explanation. Today we had an issue that shouldn't have been an issue, blow up where she should've backed my position and didn't because it was the easier thing to do, and I ended up looking like an ignorant *itch when I truly believe I was not in the wrong at all. Then, one of our other team members beneath me came in my office today saying how perterbed she was with her, because she had a very similar thing happen to her today, too. So it's not just me.

My main problem is that as somewhat of the 'assistant supervisor', I check half the team's work. There's one man in particular who has been there 15 years, that has a really hard time changing his ways and always does things the old way... which is now wrong. Most of my confrontations with the supervisor have been because I sent something back to him to fix, and he disputed it because according to some procedure from 10 years ago, it's right. She tends to side with him and make it work somehow, which makes me look like an idiot, which in turn makes him trust my opinion even less so he disputes my decisions even more. She has told him several times "you're not wrong", when yes, he is.

So now, after the past two hell days, I've begun to remember that yes, I have had complaints but over looked them. The way I've felt all day, if it happens for a third consecutive day tomorrow I'll put aside my complete and utter non-confrontational ways and have a talk with her... if I can calm my temper in time.

Sorry for the rant... grrrrrr... so frustrated.

Maaannn... the more I think about it the more upset I get, again.

I feel like telling her that she needs to trade me another employee for that guy if she's not going to back my decisions, but that makes me, technically a "supervisor in training", look like I can't handle difficult employees to the big boss even though I only ask her when he disputes it because I know he'll just take it to her anyway to over-ride me (he's done that several times). I feel like telling her, how dare she actually snicker at one of my decisions to another supervisor, in front of me and the guy.... when it was the other supervisor who trained me to do exactly what I was asking him to do.

One thing's for sure... if he does ever dispute anything I've sent back to him again I'm going to take the info, tell him I'll get back with him, and go ask without him present. Since he's always looking to establish rule precedents when I send things back to him and always makes a big deal of it, if I ask without him there at least they won't feel so inclined to agree with him to stroke his ego. Which I can't believe he has considering he's already been demoted and written up several times because he just... doesn't get it.

I'm so
OMG, I've got to stop stewing about this!! I'll go crazy!!!

I would try and defuse the situation first by going to her and asking her which way she prefers him to do his work - the new way or the old way, as you are feeling confused about her wishes. If you still get confrontations after that then you may have to go above her. It is so difficult being hte middle person in a job like that.
