I'll start by saying that Josephine has made incredible progress since we rescued her - she used to bite and scream and hiss and scratch, all the time, and now she's quiet and cuddly. However, I've NEVER heard her purr. She can lay in my lap and get her head and chin scratched and look as happy as can be, but I've never heard her purr once. Do some cats just not purr, or is she still adjusting?

I've had some that just didn't purr, and a lot that purred, but you'd never know it unless you could feel their throat.
Currently, I have a house full of motorboats, and one that sounds like a dying engine, all sputtering and wheezing (she's always purred like that).

Great!! I was just going to say that some cats' purrs are very quiet. You can't hear them unless you put your ear down next to them.

After about 10 years, I finally felt my Max purr. It was like what Arlyn said, I could only feel it a little bit in his throat, but it was there! I went running into my husband yelling, OMG Max is purring! It's the simple things I get so excited about! LOL!

Out of Lilos Kittens' (I only have 3 left) I never hard ANY of them purr.

They are 13 weeks old this coming Sunday. Is there a certain age I wonder that they have to be?

Garfield on the other hand.... Purrs loud enough for him, Lilo, and the remaining 3 babies....

One of my cat books says they can start at 5 days old while nursing, but I had a couple start sooner than that...but only when they are nursing.
