common law marriages and rights

Hi all.I have a question about common law marriages....well my sister left a common law marriage after 3 years.well this is the story....

well she caught her bf in bed with another woman at the womans house...the womans brother let her in.She didn't say anything and walked out...she got in her and his van and drived away..that cops stopped her and said it was reported stolen and she enter the womans house without permission. now my sister has charges put against her...and the woman put a peace pond(I think there called)against my sister.

Back to my question....they have purchase a mini home,van,satalites and different other things to go in a home....now everything that is in the house and all of the vichelrs which are 4 of them is in his company name that he works for.

I was just wondering with is my sisters right...also for the last 3 years my sister wasn't aloud to go to work and do anything besides help him....her boyfriend was very controlling and mentally abusive...As for hitting I ask my sister and she said no..


also I would like you all to send vibes,prayers whatever can help her...her name is Jennifer and thankgod she has no kids to go through this...she does have 2 cats which are indoor cats and the both are spayed and declawed..and she has a pomeraian dog....

but I guess all I can do for her now is pray and hopefully she gets what she really deserves...

Remember i'm from the UK so your laws maybe different?!

When i was with my ex boyfriend, everything i bought was with my money and was also in my name.

I had a quiet word with my solicitor one day asking him about this commonlaw man and wife situation, and he assured me there was no such thing, and even if there was everything was in my name so he had no claim to it even though he stayed with me.

So thats a lesson to all men and woman, whatever you buy make sure it's in both your names and if your going to buy a large item together, give him or her a cheque to bank for your half, never cash.

It's just like any debts, your liable for whatevers in your name only.

I "think" that she could fight for 50% of the property. Common law marriages are looked at as legal marriages in the terms of property and children. But I'm guessing it would take a lot of court time, lawyers, etc., especially if he's going to be an a** about it.

My common law boyfriend threatened me in anger that he was entitled to half my car (in my name) when we were breaking up. I just gave him my "look" and said in a low threatening voice "don't even go there or you'll be sorry". Actually I was kind of worried inside but didn't want to show it!! Luckily he's too much of a procrastinator and apathetic to have done anything like that! LOL.

Yes, they would be common-law after 3 years, but she isn't entitled immediately to half of the property..
She can file for spousal support or child support (they look at the permanence of a situation and she would have more of a chance in court if they had children obviously)

In this state, even common law marriages have to have paperwork filed at the courthouse to make them binding as far as property goes.

My sister decided that she doesn't want anything after all.....She said if he wants to screw with her head and around on her she can do the same thing to him except she screwed with his job.....he was frauding his company and claiming things he shouldn't so she took it upon her and called the main office and let the know....and the woman that he slept with wanted him for his money.so now he lost his job and all his vicals which was all 4 and has no more money,the woman broke off with him.....So I guess my sister ex got what was comming to him

Well now my sister is all happy got a good job and is planning on buying a new house...she got all her bills paid off too
