Hey guys, quick question for anyone who has taken anatomy.....

I signed up for Anatomy and Physiology I for fall term. I did not realize until today that the prereq is that you have taken either high school or college chemistry within the last 5 years. I have never taken chemistry and all of the classes are booked. I HAVE to keep Anatomy to stay on my schedule to get into the nursing program.... I am planning to just go for it but I am nervous. DO you think I can make it through without having taken chemistry? I know it will be more work but I am up for it.

I'm taking Anatomy and Physiology this fall, too! I, too am taking it so that I can get into a nursing program!!!!! Maybe we can have PM study sessions! If you got through chem in high school, you should be ok. You should be able to sign up for a tutor thru your school if you have problems
. Like I said, maybe we can help each other via online, too!

That is odd. I took A & P at my technical/trade school and I took my GED in 11th grade. I'm not a genius or anything but I found it very easy to come out at the top of my A & P class, probably because I was so interested in it and everyone else just viewed it as a prereq. for their specialty class.

Hi, I saw your thread and I thought I could help...I am a nurse, and A+P classes have a small amount of chem in them, but I don't think it will be anything you would'nt be able to catch onto quickly, without having chem before...If you need some help, just PM me...

My hubby took A&P to become an LPN. He had been out of high school for almost 20 years, and he never took Chemistry, or anything remotely close to it in high school. His intentions in high school were to be an auto mechanic after graduating. He was a mechanic for about 10 years after high school, then he went into machining. When that job went to Mexico, he had no choice but go back to school. He figured by going into the medical profession, the job market wouldn't go away. He has now been an LPN for about 3 years. The part of his nursing school that was hard for him was the Pharmacology class, where he had to learn the classifications of drugs and their uses.
Good luck to you! And though it's already been offered, if there's any way I can help, PM me.

I have taken 2 years of Anatomy & Physiology, and was not required to take that...and made it out of both with a B average
. They're hard classes, lots of memorization, testing and so on, but if you stay focused and what worked for me was to keep my going over the materials to only what was going to be asked, abbriviate where I could, and study for only 1 hour a day every day, doing a mock up fo going through the written parts of the test with my books and what our instructor wanted us to know. I hope that helps, and good luck!

I think that if you are adept at science in the slightest, it should work. Its a different area of science than A and P after all.

However, CHECK with your school to make sure that you will get credit for the A and P without the Chem.. Here, if something is a prerequisite and you don't take it, you don't get the credit for the consecutive course...So, make sure...

Tanya, we know you can do it!!!
I took A&P last year, admittedly along with Chem (friends thought I was crazy!) but I didn't see a lot of overlap. My text had a lengthy chapter in the beginning of the semester on the nitnoid processes of biochem, but it wasn't too intensive and was mainly used as background for the following chapters. Team up with a classmate who's had Chem already if you think it may be troublesome, or sign up for tutoring. You have plenty of offers for help here, too. Just remember we're here for ya!!!

Sure you can! I had to take A&P for nursing as well, and I never had a Chemistry class before that. I don't know why you'd need Chemistry actually. A&P is mostly memorization...memorizing where everything is and what it's called.
Good luck.

I believe you can do it..just approach a&p as a fascinating class that you want to dive into (and as a nurse to be, it should be
)

I had been out of college for 5 or 6 years when I went back to school for an associates and my RN, I didn't take college chemistry so it had been even longer since my high school chem class...I did just fine. You will too!

Ah...I have fond memories of the box of bones you could check out (had to stay in the library with them) to study

I agree, you won't need chemistry to take Anatomy. But before starting nursing school, I had to have chemistry. I had taken it in high school, so that counted. But several other people who hadn't, went back and took a high school course of chemistry because it is simpler than college level chem. You might look into doing that!

Best of luck, we always need more

I can not tell you how much better I feel! Thanks so much guys!

Thanks especially for the offers of pm tutoring! And Kelly that would be great if we helped eachother during the semester. It might be fun
I bought a set of Netters Anatomy flash cards and have been working on them a little this summer.

I do have to take chemistry before nursing school and my plan was to take it next semester with A&P II. When I made my plan, I didn't realize I should have planned the chem before A&P. But you guys have given me the encouragement I needed, I think I will be fine. We do have a great tutoring program at school so it's always nice to know that's available to me if I need it as well.

Now, if I can just get some help waking up in time to make it to my 6:30 am A&P class this semester........
