I thought an interesting topic to discuss might be mainstream actors that you only know as an actor, surprising you by singing in one of their movies or shows... and singing well! I know a lot of actors do broadway stuff, like Bebe Neuwirth (Frasier, Cheers) who did Chicago, but still sometimes I'm taken aback when I hear a favorite star belt one out. It makes me think I should read up on them more to see what I'm missing! Perhaps they even got their start on Broadway and few people know it!

Here's three good ones (with clips of them singing):
Kate Winslet
If I have to tell you who she is, you must've been under a rock during the entire year of 1998.

Scott Bakula
Lots of stuff, including Star Trek, Enterprise

Jean Louisa Kelly
Best known for the sitcom "Yes, Dear"

Who else do you know of that can really sing, and most of the mainstream isn't aware of it?

Minnie Driver is a really good singer!, I see that she released a CD, it was pretty good too, and she showed off her singing ability in Phantom of the Opera.

Cool! I didn't see Phantom so I didn't know that. Here's a clip I found of one of her songs.

How about Richard Gere, who proved that he could not only sing, but dance in the movie Chicago. I was also pretty surprised at Catherine Zeta Jones, and her singing and dancing ability from the same movie.

And then there was Bette Midler, Lou Diamond Phillips, Patrick Swayze, Willie Nelson and John Travota.

Actully I think I read somewhere that she started out as a lounge singer/dancer so the role wasnt really that much of a stretch for her. Except for the fact that some of the shots she is pregnant in. I have always thought she was so pretty, I think it was her hair.

Well I was reading Kylie Minogues autobiography last night and she was one that started off as an actress and then had a fully formed singing career!

Bette Midler, started out as a singer, and John Travolta did some singing early in his career, as far as I know Willie Nelson has always been a singer. I know Patrick Swayze was a dancer before he was an actor. I've never seen Lou Diamond Phillips sing. I know he was in La Bamba, but as far as I know he didn't do his own singing in that movie.

I was going to say John Travolta, too. I used to have a huge crush on him in the "Welcome Back Kotter" days. Remember his character Vinnie Travalino? Well, I had an album of his that I just loved. When I listened to it years later, he sounded so off-key on some of the songs! And it was really poorly done! I don't think I have it anymore...otherwise I could use it to torture my kids! LOL!

How could I have forgotten Moulin Rouge?

I liked Chicago but I wasn't impressed with Rene Zellweger's voice at all. Then she went on to do Down With Love with Ewan...
It's "cutsie" but not good!

The guy from Baywatch - whose name I forget - (also was in Knight Rider), Hasseltoff, something like that - is a big singing star in Europe!
