I need to find a vet for lollipop and I was comparing prices. What is a reasonable price to pay for a vet? This one place i checked out had the following prices:

Basic exam: $47
Each Vaccine: $19.50
FIV/FLV testing: $62
Spay:$160

Is this reasonable? Too much? Too little? Median? Need your opinions!

There's no place like home
Keep checking around. City vets tend to be a lot higher than country vets but city vets typically have more cat/dog training (country vets often cover livestock and are not as expert with dogs/cats).

I have a country vet and he charges me roughly:

Exam and vaccinations: $55
FIV/FLV test: $25
Spay/neuter: $45 - $65 (depending on age, sex and whether dog or cat)

All vets have different prices. Check around and see. But also don't just look for the cheapest vet, make sure they know what they are doing.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll keep looking around. I thought this one was kind of pricey too, and since Im still a student...

Yeah, for sure. That's the best advice you can get out of this thread.

I can't remember offhand the cat prices, as my cats are just now due for thier shots again. But my dogs were just there recently, and it's $18 for the office call (regardless of how many pets you bring), $18 for the combo canine shot, $7 for the rabies shot, and $18 for a heartworm test.
I know the cat prices are pretty comparable. I know it's $18 for the leukemia test. Gizmo's spay was around $100 total, including the pain meds. He doesn't charge anything to bring them in to have stitches removed. And if you bring them in twice for the same problem, the office call is charged as a "recheck" at $9. My job takes me to Petsmart frequently, and they tried to sell me on their vet. $27 for a heartworm test, $14.95 for a rabies shot, $27 for a combo shot. Ummmm.....no I think I'll stick with my vet! Not to mention my vet is a half hour from my house in a small town, and Petsmart requires an hour long drive through a big city!

Wanted to add, after reading the other posts, that I am confident in my vet's abilities, and have used him for many years. He's good with my pets (even my horse that always tried to kick him) and definitely knows what he's doing. And although he SELLS Science Diet, he doesn't tell people that they should buy it, like some vets do.

Sounds a bit pricy to me. But then again, it depends on where you live. In California, a lot of other things are more expensive but not when it comes to vets. Unless of course you go to Beverly Hills or Santa Monica.
The exam is generally $30-32, so is testing. Shots are around $15-17, but at some places I asked they charge up to $50. That is a total rip off since a lady from a rescue group told me those shots only cost $3-4 for them, so keep looking. Some places have one day of the week where all the shots are half off. So I usually find a place where shots are within the range of ~$10. Spaying should be less than $100 for sure, keep looking around. I paid $45 for a spay! And not because I am low income, just their general prices. And they did good job too.

You'll be surprised how much those prices vary, and more expensive in this case doesn't mean better. Sometimes some clinics will charge you more for some services and less for others, so in the beginning you might want to go to different places, but afterwards pick the vet you like the most and keep going there. Also, I would suggest you go online and googlesearch "low cost vet clinics [name of your city/area]"

Good luck.

Are you opposed to a low cost spay and nueter Clinic ? I had all mine done, spay $25, testing $18, 4-1 shots $13, probably around $30 for exam, I have no Idea where you are in ca though. I had 13 of them taken care of at this Clinic, and I guess if I didn't feel good about them I would find a vet to care for them after that, but none of mine had any problems at all.

The best prices I found in the area were in Pasadena, CA. But Glendale isn't bad either.

Your spay price seemed a bit expensive, but other than cost considerations to me would be the location of the vet's office from your residence in case of an emergency.

My vet charges $32 for a basic exam and $100 for a spay - incl meds. Depending on where you live, there are clinics that offer low cost spay - part of s.n campaigns I would guess.

For me, it's something like 35 for a basic exam, Leo's last round of vaccines costed around 50, but since we're an indoor-only family, I do the 3 years ones for distemper and rabies only, lab costs and bloodwork each are generally around 20-25. His prescription for his ear infection only cost like 15.

I'm not sure about neutering, since Leo was fixed when I adopted him. I know my shelter does spays for 25 and neuters for 20, but that's a low-cost clinic, not a vet's office.
