Taby's got a wound in his back. I noticed that there was something wrong last night 'cause he was just too quiet but I couldn't see anything. Today I noticed he's licking and licking a spot on his back and, sure enough, there's a small wound there.

I called the vet but he was in a bit of a hurry. He told me cat wounds heal up really quickly and to just put in a anti-infective spray and to buy some powder, I guess to help him heal. No antibiotics.

He's very lethargic but his apetite's fine. But no antibiotics? Do you think that's fine? Not sure if it's a bite, probably a scratch, altho it looks like a round spot. The blood's dried and he doesn't seem to be in too much pain. But he's so calm, it worries me a bit.

Anyone has had experiences with this?

No, it doesn't sound fine. When my cat got wounds on his face (he scratched himself with his paw) I was given antibiotics for the cat. So, I would take the cat to another vet, or call another vet for advice.

You do need to see another vet, as there is a strong chance this could turn into an abscess, especially if it has been caused by another cat, which can be very nasty.

Some wounds/abscesses do clear without antibiotic - Persil had one that was treated only with antiseptic liquid and healed. The next time she got one though a different vet did give her antibiotics. The first vet said that antibiotics can sometimes cause healing on the surface too fast, and it is better to let the wounds heal from inside, so to ensure no pool of infection. But if they do not respond and start healing in a few days then an antibiotic is called for. This surprised me until last month my dentist told me the same thing about an abscess I had on a tooth! She refused to give me an antibiotic, just drained and cleaned it out and packed it with antiseptic gel. And it healed. But don't leave it if it looks worse, and do keep it clean.

I would agree to keep an eye on it-it could turn into an abcess with then is another problem.

When my cat's abscess, I keep the wound open and clean and flush it. I watch for the danger signs by passing my hand over the wound not touching it. If heat rises up to meet my palm (just inches above the wounds) then the cat is put on antibiotics. Unless it is a really bad bite, I don't go to the vet. I just call and say," Hey Doc, can I have some clavamox please?" He knows me well enough that he trusts my judgement and unless I ask for antirobe, he will not ask to see the cat just gives me the antibiotic.

The problem is that a cat's mouth carries so much bacteria. That is why when they capture birds, even if they don't bite them, the birds will usually die anyway. That bacteria is what you want to watch out for.

Please get some anibiotics, i had a kitten die from an abscess on her head, and it got infected. the infection started to eat the skull away, and she had to be put down. i never got any anibiotics, and the whole thing started with just a small wound. i don't think yours will be that severe, but i highly recommend it because a cat's mouth has high amounts of bacteria.
