My old tabby passed away a coupld of years ago..he was the best old thing..

My kids are now asking for a cat. My husband is being a pain about it..but I think Im gonna buck him.

I REALLY have an affinity toward any sort of FLUFFY long haired cat..but am really concerned about too much shedding in the house..that makes me nuts.

Anyone have any suggestions on the type of cat to look for that wouldn't be TOOO finicky about having kids around pulling on them?

Are there any specific breeds with long hair that don't shed too much? Or is that even a possibility?

Any thoughts?

I don't know anything about cat breeds. I'd visit your local humane society/animal shelter and just visit with the cats they have. There's at least ONE cat out there for everybody!

DON'T get a Russian Blue!! They are mellow but timid...lol.

A Turkish Van would be a great breed for you to get if you have a breeder near you. They are semi-longhaired white and ginger cats with the MOST amazing personalities. They LOVE water, can be taught to fetch, will hop in the shower or tub with you (I'm not kidding), love children - are basically a dog in a cat's body, and not too longhaired for shedding to be a big problem. You can't really get them in Australia otherwise I'd definitely have one for sure.

Or what about a Persian? They do need a lot of grooming but they are the world's most popular breed for a reason - because they are just the sweetest things alive and you can't help but adore them.

However, my best advice would be to go to a shelter and get a kitty that your kids fall in love with, who needs a good home and lots of loving. That way it won't matter what breed you get because you'll be doing a needy kitty a favour, and it will love you like nothing else if you save it. Two out of three of mine are from shelters and they are beautiful girls. It would definitely be my port-of-call.

If you want a specific breed, though, go the American Cat Fancier's Association website - they are a wealth of information!

Good luck!

Most Petsmart stores have foster groups showing cats and kittens every saturday. Call them to find out for sure. A cat who has been fostered will have a foster mom (or dad) who can tell you if kitty is good with the litter box, good with kids, friendly, etc. If you don't like the look of any cats you see, just ask, I'm sure they have plenty of others available!

If your kids are young (under 5) you will not want a kitten, because they are more likely to be scratched.

Good luck in getting a cat, I'm sure there is one out there needing a home desperately!

Please go to a shelter to adopt. There is a loving kitty waiting to become a part of your families life right now.

Visit a shelter or rescue group!! You won't be finding many purebreds (if any), but you WILL find that one kitty who is just right for your family!!

The best type of kitty is the one that finds you. My husband wasn't looking for a cat when his sister-in-law found two tiny manx kittens at a shelter who were about to be put down. She gave him one and my MIL the other. This is the most wonderfully tempered cat. Lucy was the last kitten of a litter that my vet was taking care of and we saw her and while she has her moments, she is a loyal and loving cat. Carly was at PetsMart who flirted and cuddled with my husband so we ended up with three cats. In all of these cases, we weren't looking, they just came to us.

Give the shelters and sanctuaries a shot. Cat hair is a fact of cat ownership.
