Ok, I think my head is about to explode. I really HATE the idea of having to make an important decision when I have a time limit.

Here's what's going on. I live in Ontario right now and I am moving to Montreal in Sept. I am going to Montreal this weekend to look at apartments. I HAVE to find something this weekend. I cannot afford to go twice (it costs me close to $200 to take the bus there and back). So I am really stressing out about it.
I have 6 apartments to go see tomorow so far. What if I don't like any of them? Or what if I like the first one I see, don't take it right away and by the time I decide it's taken??
They all seem like they could at least be suitable (within my budget, convenient location) except that I didn't ask them if they allowed cats. I think that's the kind of thing that's better to ask in person (after tehy see that I look like a responsible person) so I never ask over the phone.
What if none of them allow cats?

Ok, I am just freaking out right now.

And to top it all off, my bus leaves at around 2am and I'll get to Montreal around 10am. Which means I'll have to sleep on the bus. Fun.

Ok - the good thing is you have six to go look at, and all of them "sound" suitable. This is a good thing! Imagine if you only had 1 or something?

Second of all, you must manifest that you WILL find the perfect apartment for yourself this weekend. write it down on a piece of paper, keep looking at it often. TRULY BELIEVE you will find your apartment this weekend.

You have tons of time to sleep on the bus.....take a Gravol, knock yourself out. Relax and be happy someone else is doing the driving.

Who knows, if you don't like any of the 6 apartments, you may come across a bulletin board or "for rent" sign that would be perfect for you.

I know it's stressful, but in these stressful times, you must believe that you will find something - and trust me - you will.......

I would suggest coming up with a list of things you must have, would like to have, and don't want. This way you can concentrate on what is important to you and feel like you are making an informed decision. As for the fears of availability, etc, sometimes you just have to have faith that things will sort themselves out. You can't control everything.

Good luck and let us know how it went.

Sometimes hotels or motels will rent to you for a month or two, and that gives more time to find the place you love. This could be a back-up plan. Usually it costs more per month, and you have to move twice..but it is a baci-up plan. My sister and her family and cat lived in such a place for over a month while house hunting!

Thanks.
Actually since I still had hours until I leave and not much to do, I invited some friends over to watch a movie. That forced me to relax a bit. I'm feeling better now. And the little glass of Sangria might have helped as well

Ok, I'm still very anxious but I'll try to look at the positive:
- If I don't find something, I wont be homeless. I can live with my parents for a few weeks if I have to (ok, I don't get along with my parents so I'll try to avoid that, but it's still better than being on the street).
- The very first apartment I will look at is the one that sounds best. If it's good (no roaches, no mold and a reasonable size) and if they'll rent it to me, I'll take it! Then I'll have the whole weekend to do whatever I want in Montreal.
- If I don't find any I like on Saturday, I just grab a newspaper, call more people on Saturday night and go see on Sunday or Monday morning.
- If I need an extra day, I'll just call my boss and it wont be a problem.
- At least I wont be bored all weekend for once!

Ok, I'll go take a shower and pack. Then I'll take another glass of Sangria before I leave and I should sleep like a baby on the bus!

Yes I do. Actually my first language is French. I have adopted English as my new language, but it's still good to be able to speak French. Very useful.

Bon voyage! Have a good weekend and don't worry - as you have said, there are other optios available if you don't find what you want immediately. And there is no law that says you HAVE to stay for ever in the first place you occupy - maybe negotiate a three/six month lease and see how you like it?

Thanks everyone!

Well my trip started pretty badly. I barely slept on the bus because it was full and my neighbor was taking up all my leg room. Jerk.

Anyways, I made it to Montreal. First apartment I saw I was really hopefull for. Turned out to be pretty bad. I didn't like the neighborhood. It smelled funny. I was in the apartment for about 10 minutes and I was feeling dizzy. Which means that there was probably mold somewhere (I'm very sensitive to mold).

So I went to the second apartment. As I was waiting for the owner to come, I had a good look at the street it was on and I just prayed that the apartment was nice cause I just loved the street. It was a nice residential street with townhouses and lots of big trees. I went inside and it was great! A little small but very clean and fairly modern. So I filled in an application and after a few phone calls... I got the apartment!!!
I love it. It's only 2km from the University, which means I can walk or bike there (saves me the price of a bus pass too) and only 2 blocks from a very long bike path. The price of the rent is very reasonable too.
I'm sure the cats will love it too. There's less place to run around than my current apartment but there is a balcony! And nice windows with view on a tree (so lots of birds to look at).

I'm so happy!!

Congratulations -
see everything works out in the end. The place sounds lovely and convenient. Hope you and the little ones get settled quickly and live happily every after (or until the next move).
