Okay, my kittens are now just over eight weeks old, and i still sometimes catch them nursing on mommy. it looks funny, because she is a tiny cat and the kittens are huge compared to her. it is not all the time and usually when they all cuddle together to go to sleep. should i be discouraging this or just let them decide when enough is enough. I am keeping them all until they are twelve weeks old. It drives my husband crazy seeing them still nurse,

I just let my momma wean the kittens herself. There is no real harm in it, and if it comforts them why not? I think they will be done in another week or two, anyhow.

I'm assuming she is going to be spayed, right? They do need to finish so she can go for the surgery, but a few more days or weeks won't make a big difference, IMHO!

Kittens should definitely still be nursing at 8 weeks. Even though they are getting more and more of their nutrition from solid food, they will continue nursing occasionally until at least 14 weeks as long as mom lets them.

I'm a little curious about why it bothers your husband, though...

Dutchy is fixed..and her kittens are..plenty old enough but once in a while i catch them still trying to nurse on mom she lets them. it makes them happy its never more than a moment or so before they fall asleep all cuddled up.

It's so funny when the kittens are tall enough that they can reach the nipples even when Mom is standing up. Mom will try to get up and leave and the kittens will still be latched on, side-stepping under her to keep the nipple in their mouths. They look so goofy.

My CJ is small too, and her kittens nursed until they were 12 weeks old. They still try to nurse, now, and they're FIVE MONTHS OLD!!!!
We always stop them though. They're too big for that, and it's not healthy for CJ... not when they're that old. Eight weeks sounds normal to me, though.

It does look silly when they seem to be getting "too big".

But honestly, I nursed all my kids, and while it looks real sweet when they are tiny, as they get older and are eating solid foods, it looks silly, too, sometimes. And I have a sister who nursed her kids until they were two. They mostly only nurse at bedtime by that age, but their legs hang off her lap. This may be a little off topic, but the principal is the same.

If Mommy wants to keep nursing the kits, let her. If she is overwhelmed by them, you can make sure she has a place where she can get away from them.
