Just then I tried to add a post with 10 smilies in it and it wouldnt allow me, I just kept getting the below error message - finally it would let me submit it after I got the number of smilies down to 8.

The following errors occurred when this message was submitted:
You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the vB code tag and HTML <img> tags. The use of these is all subject to them being enabled by the administrator
This has happened a number of times in the last couple of days. Have you changed the settings or anything? [img]https://statich.thecatsite.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

Yes, we have. During our last troll incident, there was a thread that was causing computers to freeze up when opened. It turns out that the poster had posted over 1000 smilies in the post, and that was causing the lock up. We decided to limit the number of smilies that could be used in a single post.

ok thank you for this! I was just encountering the same problem when trying to do a birthday greeting! I checked here first, and shazam - I've got my answer.

I checked with Deb via PM (cause I had some other comments also) and she said the limit was 10. But if you read the error message, it also states that this includes images, etc in your signature:

You have included too many images in your signature or in your previous post. Please go back and correct the problem and then continue again.

Images include use of smilies, the vB code

It's good to know, anyway, that that's the cause of the lock-ups, not some new way of embedding malicious code in a post.

But isn't 10 a little on the low side? If I embedded several pics, some smilies, and my sig, that could easily add up to something over 10.

That is what I asked Deb in my PM and she replied

which is why I dropped the hint that we needed to get everyone to help support TCS.

Well I don't want to mislead anybody:

Having 50 smilies in a post won't cause a problem for the server, but it will cause problems for the end user who is viewing the post as their computer might not be able to handle that many animations going at the same time. As I was going to delete that post with over 1000 smilies, it even gave my G5 trouble as I tried to go to the delete button.

Although I was not part of the decision as to what the limit should be, I think that 10 smilies is fairly generous - but I won't take sides.

Nevertheless, support TCS

Thanks Thomas.

Lots and lots of smilies cause threads to load very slowly, especially if users have dial-up. Remember 10 for you and 10 for every other person who posts in the thread.

I don't know if it can be coded, but another way to handle this is to put a limit on the number of repeated images. No troll is going to waste his time constructing a post with 1000 different images.

Not an option in our administrative panel.

And in hindsight, I know in the past we have had threads that focus on smilies - What's your favorite smilie? - for example. As these threads got more and more replies, they were more and more cumbersome to load on my computer.

It's hard to not be disappointed
that we can't have more smilies, but I know that not everyone can afford the G5 like Thomas (though my husband is salivating for one
).

Thanks for reminding us that others who have dial-up need consideration too. And thanks for all the efforts you put into keeping the site useful for everyone (not just us selfish broadband users
).
