Do you think they do anything? I lost one of on my boxes and am wondering whether I should replace it. I think if you need a filter because the box smells, it's not clean enough. I don't use a covered box for odor control; I only have it because Prego is a "flinger" and I got sick of cleaning up litter all over the place. We're talking half inch tall piles of litter.

I can't really tell. I replace it every few months - they are cheap (.97cents @ WalMart?) and I just grab one when I'm shopping for kitty toys.

They can't hurt, but I wouldn't fall over backwards to change it either.

A suggestion for dealing with a flinger: a box with high sides. You can either buy one ready-made as a litterbox. Petsmart sells it. It's made by Rubbermaid and has sides over 10 in. high. Or you can make your own out of a plastic storage bin bought from the housewares section of a department store.

I don't care for uncovered litter box. Covered litter boxes are much better.
My cat taken to scratching the wallpaper while covering his poop, when I had an un-covered litter box. Now, he is scratching the insides of the box, it's great for the wall paper. As for the filters, I ignore them, and never change them, I don't think they make any difference.

I don't think they make any difference. I really don't see how they could, since the door is still open! But I do love the covered litterboxes. I used a big rubbermaid tub for the outside cats in the garage...since they no longer use it I am considering bringing it in for the housecats. My friend with LOTS of cats, has 27 rubbermaid tubs for litterboxes!

One of my litter boxes is covered and has the "filter" insert. I have also wondered if it really absorbs odor. I have doubts that it's very effective. I have yet to replace the original filter that came with it when I bought it last November. I suppose I should remove in case of bacteria and germs building up on it.
