how long can you leave them in the day ?

i would be happy with any cat but i would like an calm cat is it down to the breed you get, or is that just the way you train them

how much are they to keep?

i live in a flat and thinking about keeping it indoors for its own safety as i live by a busy road do you think that ok ?
dont know if its cruel keeping it inside

any advise on training and feeding would be great

Hi Lara

Keeping your kitty inside if you live on a busy road is a very wise and responsible decision.

Are you looking into adopting a Domestic type cat or a Pedigree?

Good on you! I have two kittens that I leave all day when I'm at work and they're fine. I would suggest that if you're going to leave them all day, you think about getting a pair as they will amuse each other and keep each other out of trouble. A single cat will look for amusement where ever he can find it and may get lonely, although some cats do like to be solitary - depends on the personality. Mine also stay indoors full time, and they're absolutely fine!

Cost wise, I suppose about £5 a week on cat food, plus another £5 on litter. Then there's the cost of various toys which don't have to be expensive, and I would highly recommend investing in a cat tree (cats love to scratch and climb) which will cost anywhere from £60 upwards. My first vet visit for vaccinations cost £40, and the second visit for boosters, worming paste and flea spot ons cost £70 (bear in mind thats for two kittens). The next cost will be to neuter them, not sure how much that will be, then it's just annual booster jabs.

If you're looking for calmer cats, I know persians have a reputation for being calm, but they are a lot of work to keep the coat tangle free. Have you considered getting a cat of maybe two or three years old rather than a kitten - he will have grown out of that physco kittie stage and will be much calmer, plus you'll have a better idea of whether or not his personality will adapt to being an only cat in a quiet house.

Hi Lara!! Welcome to TCS!! The one bad thing about kittens is what Purity refers to as the psycho kitty stage. They try to climb up your legs and back using their claws for traction. They dart around the room at 90 mph for no apparent reason. Human hands and feet are their favorite toys (Ouch). They get into anything and everything and knock things over.

Oh, wait a minute! These aren't bad things! These are all what makes kittens so darn cute and such a joy to be around! Nothing can make a person laugh and feel happy like a kitten! If you want a calm pet, maybe get an adult cat. But if you want fun and exitement, get a kitten.

Tabbies are lovely, and there are many to adopt at shelters. If you do not have a load of time for grooming/cleaning then a shorthair is best.I agree with getting two if you can - but do remember to calculate the costs well (good on you for asking, many people don't) and think about either pet insurance or (better in my opinion) putting money away regularly for those emergencies. And they will arise. We are all biased here of course, but a cat brings such joy into your life that none of the TCS members could imagine life without a furry companion. Good luck in your search.
