Does anyone on here have (or know someone who has) Celiac Disease ? (To sum it up, Celiac is an extreme intolerance to anything with wheat or gluten in it). I'm just curious because they say it may affect as many as 1 out of ever 133 people. My mother has it and I have shown some symptoms and probably need to get tested for it.

My boss just says he is allergic to wheat, but it developed a few years ago and he was very ill before being diagnosed. And I believe another co-worker's daughter has it, and was severely ill before being diagnosed and changing her diet.

They are both in good health now. But often, when we bring donuts or treats to the office, my boss has to decline. And he brings smelly rice crackers to eat with his lunch sometimes. I believe it is very treatable through diet. I don't know if either of them is medicated for this.

I think you should do the testing, then you will know for sure, and consequently be more careful if necessary. Or maybe they can tell you how to avoid it progressing from mild to severe. Good luck!

I'm sending vibes that you test negative for celiac.

I don't personally know anyone with it. I did read on a website the other day that more "gluten free" products are gonna hit the market soon
. Amy, if feel you're having symptoms, you do need to be tested. Take care of yourself
Don't make us worry!

Thanks y'all. You're right- I need to get tested, I'm just afraid of what the tests will say.
Becky, you are VERY right in that Celiac is 100% treatable with diet. What sucks is the diet itself! There are SO many things with gluten in it- from beer to bread, pasta to some food colorings. It's nuts! And it is EXPENSIVE to buy the special gluten-free foods. Companies charge more b/c they know people need this food and will pay for them, whatever the cost
.
Also Becky- your boss almost definitely has Celiac disease. Maybe next time your office has donuts/treats for breakfast, someone can bring your boss some bacon and eggs or something else he could eat. I guarantee he'd appreciate it

You do need to get tested, lovey. Coeliac Disease is one of the illnesses that I deal with in my job in Gastroenterology. It's very much a hereditary illness so if your Mum has it and you are having symptoms it would be well worth your while having a test for it. There is a website you can go to for more information - it is an Australian one but excellent nonetheless - http://www.wa.coeliac.org.au.

Good luck! It can be very readily controlled by a strict diet and if you are good with your diet you can go into remission and not have problems for years.

We do try to think of him...fresh fruit salads, etc. I work at a doctor's office, so often it is pharmaceutical reps bringing stuff in. We try to keep a sense of humor for him-want to lick some frosting off a donut?

And anytime we have something that looks "safe" for him, we share. Or if soemthing containing wheat doesn't taste as good as it looks, I tell him so! Or if it is homemade, and really delicious, we tempt him to eat it despite the wheat! Once in a while, he takes a little bit!

Some restaurants do lettuce wraps instead of sandwiches, so you skip the bread. And mexican food can be done with corn tortillas. It would be a huge challenge for me to make such a big change in my diet...but he really does it very smoothly. I think his wife being a nurse (and not being afraid to nag him) helps a lot.

Time to get tested...let us know how it goes!

One of my best friends has celiac disease - tho initially she thought she had MS so she prefers the celiac diagnosis. She was diagnosed about 20 yrs ago and has dine very well. There are so many more resources now. Both her children - one of whom just graduated with a combo law and MBA degree - also have it and do just fine!!

You will have to change your diet. But otherwise, you will be fine!!

Thanks for the encouragement y'all. Sarah, I couldn't get that link to work
I'll try it again from my home computer.
Yeah I know- I need the tests. I'm just so terrified. It would be so hard to give up chips, biscuits, beer....ugh.
Becky, lol, that is funny about the ribbing you give your boss. However, being the daughter of a Celiac sufferer, I'd advise NOT to tempt them, even if the food is especially good. If they break their diet in the least, at BEST they get bad diarrhea and very itchy skin (called dermatitis or something like that) and at worst they become more suceptible to certain cancers. So just tell your boss that everything tastes horrible (even if he knows it's not true) but don't allow him to "cheat"- even once. Trust me on that one!

Under the cats, mostly.
Sweetie, definitely get the tests. Don't be afraid to get them done either, because you know in the long run it can make all the difference to your health. I know the diet sucks, but there must be so many alternatives these days. I know what it's like to have to cater for a specific diet - my son could only have organic food... and in the UK that's hellishly expensive to have to buy, but it's so worth it to see the change in him now. It will make a world of difference if you have to change your diet... but if not, jsut think of how much more you're going to enjoy the food you do eat!
good luck

You're right (along with everyone else). I'm probably going to go to the lab sometime this month to get the testing done. My little bro has already tested negative so...keep your fingers crossed
.

Oh, by the way- let me tell y'all about a gluten-free diet. The "gluten free bread" that you can make/buy is so weak and crumbly and almost all gluten free foods taste like chalk
It is such a miserable diet! The only good thing we've found so far are these gluten-free brownies that you have to special order. They are unbelieveably delicious, but they cost almost $10 (not including S&H)!!!

It's not fair for companies to price their gluten free products so high. I swear, big companies like that do not have a conscience. Hopefully in the near future, more companies will start producing gluten free products and the prices will get competitive and lower. I hate when people get taken advantage of. Hopefully, the products will get tastier, too!
