Update on Puppy raising:

We are getting closer to getting our puppy. We just did the pre-placement class. Next step is in home evaluation and then puppy sitting for different aged puppies.

Keeping my fingers crossed

Good luck!

Its not so thourough here.. you send an application and you can get a puppy within a month. But maybe they are just needing fosters badly.

I looked into that awhile back, but I don't think I can do it right now.. I think my own dog would be jealous that the new dog would be able to come with us everytwhere while he had to stay home.

Congratulations! This is such a special thing you are doing. I have to admit, I never knew that the puppy trainers for guide dogs were families like yours or mine. Amazing!

No, I haven't brought my camera with me yet. I will have to ask the coordinator if it's allowed. If so I will post some soon.

So far out in left field I got lost

Very cool thing you are doing. One of my clients is blind, he has just started to use another dog, since his dog Chip retired. Gabe the new dog is still a little green as to what my client wants from him but they are building the trust with one another. Over time I think they will mesh together and be one.

Cathi,

That has to be hard to learn the personality of another dog. I hope the relationship progresses nicely. I am worried that if we get a dog he won't make it past formal training. But if not, at least we could possibly keep him then.

I love your signature by the way. It is really cool!

Thanks Bobbie
The Sammycat gave me the idea when he did that look of a lion holding his mouth open after he sniffed something. The Sammycat is a fruitcake kitty anyway.

My client has said on a couple of occassions that he thought that Gabe wasn't going to work out. This was right after he got him. Now that they are building their trust in one another I see them moving better and better as one.

It just kills me that when Gabe is working I can't pet him. Since he is on duty the only thing I can do is talk to him after I speak to my client first of course. My client told me that while a "Guide Dog" is working a lot of people want to pet them, but he declines their request politely, since he is a working dog the attention would make him not concentrate on his job. It makes a lot of sense to me.

I have learned a little about how those dogs are train and I must admit I admire you for what you are doing. BIG KUDOS TO YOU

We had puppy class again tonight. It was "Trick or Treat" class.
We dressed up in costumes so the puppy's would be able to experience trick or treating before Halloween.

Our in home visit is scheduled for the week after next. We will be away on a cruise next week, so it has to be after that. Maybe by Christmas we really will have a puppy! That would be so cool.

There was a new puppy
at class tonight. A ten week old Golden Retriever named Izzy. She was a big ball of fur. I dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood and had pantyhose and a short skirt on, or I would have been playing on the floor with her the entire class. She really is a cutie!

I'll keep updating as we get further into this puppy raising. I did see people with cameras tonight so I will be sure to bring mine next time.
