What is the benefits of using the crystals in the litter vs not using them?

Right now we don't but sometimes the smell is awful. Would crystals help the smell and what are their purpose?

I've used litter crystals and litter pearls, but to be honest didn't find any difference to the smell, even though they are supposed to have a deodorising effect.
