Muffin has an UTI and when I gave her some ClavaMox tonight, she bit me in the arm and wrist. I washed the wounds with soapy hot water and poured some peroxide on them. I don't know what else to do, so I just have to wait and hope the wounds don't get infective. I've never been bitten before.

If they are deep wounds, you should only wash them, peroxide can push bacteria deeper in.
Also, if they are deep, you'll want to keep them from scabbing over for a day or two to let them drain out and prevent an abcess. Use a warm, wet washcloth to do this.

Good luck, I know your pain, been there many times myself.

You did well in cleaning it. I've been scratched and bit - sometimes they get inflamed just a bit an itchy. If it starts getting itchy, benadictine spray works well for me.

Good job for washing thoroughly right away. I had a bout with an infected bite back in March - complete with ER visit and ortho consult
. If it shows any signs of swelling beyond the wound site, or red streaks under the skin GET TO A DOCTOR. I tried to avoid it, but all it got me was a lot of pain and a shortened night's sleep. The affected joint is still a little stiff, but luckily the IV antibiotics did the trick in time to avoid further treatment.

Hope you and Muffin both feel better soon!

My Female bit me awhile back right above the wrist, it didn't even bleed, but man 3 hours lter it was starting to swell and kept on swelling, it got real red also and hot, I couldn't hardly move it, I finally went to urgent care they gave me antibotics and a tetnus shot, My first time being bit also and for no reason I can think of, but I know she meant it, be careful

I'm with Erica...I would not wait for signs of an infection, just call your doctor, explain and ask for an appropriate antibiotic. I treat anything that is a true puncture wound seriously - meaning despite my usual tendencies to self treat, I don't with something like this.

I agree with Pat. See the doctor.

Halfpint, your experience and timeline are identical to mine. I was actually bitten three times, but one puncture didn't bleed at all. Within 3 hrs it was warm and starting to swell, and nothing helped - I tried ice, warm epsom soak, tylenol, neosporin, etc. By hour 12 my finger was an overstuffed and very painful sausage, and I couldn't even turn the key in the car's ignition to drive myself to the ER.

I got bitten a couple of years ago by Peedoodle - this was at the vets and he got so stressed and the vet said ALWAYS go to the doctor if this happens - cat bites are full of bacteria and very easy to get infected so I went and got some antibiotics even though it wasnt infected and it was a good time to get my tetanus updated anyway.

I've read that 30-40% of cat bites become infected. Especially if it is a puncture wound because that type of wound can't be properly cleaned. So you may want to see the doctor as a precaution. Definitely if you see any swelling or redness.

Thanks, everyone for your replies. So far there's no sign of infection but I'll give my doctor a call tomorrow and see what he says. I really do need to get a tetnus shot if nothing else.
