I currently have 3 cats and dp is after getting a sausage dog.

Just wanted to know anyones thoughts on the pros and cons of getting a sausage dog(daschund) with or without already having moggies?!

Thanks

Sarah

Doxie's were bred originally to go after badgers in badger holes. Like most hounds, they have a strong prey drive. You always have better success when you get a puppy over an adult unless you know the adult has lived with cats before. The puppy is raised to view the cats as part of their "pack" and never know otherwise.

Doxie's are very cute!! Post pics if you adopt one please!

My mom has had 2 doxies & they both have loved kitties even though the doxies do go after the gophers, ground squirrels & chipmunks with a vengeance!! I just love doxies, and I'm usu. a German Shepard or Lab kinda girl - they are so brave & stoic, yet very social and intelligent (as are the doxies)! My MIL has a doxie, too, and quickly learned to not chase the neighbor's cat (they don't have fenced front yards much in that part of MI - the locals tell me that front fences (and sometimes back ones) are for when neighbors can't get along). The prob. for you may be your cats - my mom catsits for me at her house (my own dogs are notorious cat-killers, so I've had to train my babies from birth not to trust dogs, ever,) and the kitties include Millie (my mom's doxie) in that category of "things to avoid". The only exception they'll make is for my daughter's Queensland Heeler, I think because they knew him as a puppy, and it's in their house that they see him. Poor Millie wants a cat of her own - when JC & Joey were tiny kittens she wanted to mother them SOOO badly, it was heartbreaking, but I couldn't take the chance of my kittens ever trusting dogs. I hope that you can rescue a doxie soon - they can be a bit high strung & independent for some people, but I treat them more like cats than like dogs & they've always been great with me!

Sorry, I mean that my MIL's dog learned not to chase the neighbor's cat. I don't think my MIL chases cats, ever -
Amazing what typos & grammatical errors I make when I'm cooking bacon & co-typing with JC!

My sister-in-law has had daschunds as long as I have known her. Great little dogs -- to my mind, big dogs in little skins.
She doesn't have cats at the moment, but certainly has had cats at the same time as the dogs, and they've gotten along fine.

A former neighbor had a doxie, and she and Fred were buddies. I had an old couch on my porch and they would hang out there together. Fred even brought me one of her puppies once.

Thanks for all this, any common health issues, I was told they can get problems with their short legs and ankles?

Yes, make sure you go to a reputable breeder as Dachshunds are prone to back problems.
Ie, don't look in the paper and no pet shops.

And yes, post pics when you get him/her home!!

MY parents next door neighbor always had a doxie. They were never any problem with our cats. (I'm from that part of Michigan where you don't have fences!) They weren't raised in a home with cats, but were well trained dogs. They could come visit at our house, and never caused probs with the cats.
