It's also nice to remember that this is a worldwide board and for some people English may not be their first language. Yes, it is the language of the board and everyone understands that to post here you must write in English. What may seem sloppy to one person, may have taken great care for another. It's not always easy, even for those of us who have very good English but have become rusty of late..

Anyway, my pet peeve is also spitters...
It is such a crass habit. Downtown sometimes the concrete walkway looks wet...
I really dont want to walk on your spit!!!

Really? I once got points taken off of a paper for spelling it "a lot" instead of "alot!" Guess I need to go back to fourth grade and gripe my teacher out! LOL!

I'll admit that spelling, grammar and homonym errors are a minor pet peeve of mine, but I give plenty of latitude in an informal context like online posts. As pointed out, not everyone we meet here will be a native English speaker. One thing that really does annoy me is the increasing prevalence of this in more formal areas of life. Here in the Detroit area we have a community that had been traditionally Polish, but has now become mostly Middle Eastern. Fair enough, but the stores are now posting signs ("professionally" painted signs!) that say things like "We now open Sundays!" or spelling "clothes" as "cloths"! I can't even say that it's limited to immigrant-intensive areas either, The company where I'm stationed now has a Shipping and Receiving department with a sign that reads "Shipping and Recieving".

There's a dealership on a main busy street with a flub up on their "professionally done" sign... the main sign over the door! You would think someone would've caught the error before it got that far... or maybe they prefer to look bad than do it over.

I agree, if it's something to do with business, it must be correct regardless. Thank God Outlook can be set to spell-check all emails before they're sent!

my pet hate is ppl spitting on the floor
in london theres a lot of TB,and when u see ppl (normally young men) do it i fume, its dirty and discusting and it makes my stomach turn

I hate spitting as well, but you can't get TB from walking by or stepping on someone's saliva. You have to have continued long term contact with a person to catch it.

Oh yes... and in the South you get men in big trucks spitting out their window in traffic... I've seen it come quite close to hitting the car beside them, which is just disgusting! Have they no common courtesy?

I always learned that unless you're committed to the intersection (like stuck in the middle of it), you stop for the yellow. But then its been 30 years since I took my driver's test so maybe I should review it to see if it changed.
Hmmm...
As I recall from my driver ed, back in the dark ages, the yellow was interpreted as "clear the intersection", which was further defined as "if you're not in it already, or so close that it would be unsafe to stop, then stay out of it; otherwise, get through it as quickly as it is safe to do so".

The other traffic thing that gripes me is the seemingly prevalent assumption that touching the turn signal long enough for the light to flash once while you're moving into the adjacent lane is somehow sufficient warning. People seem to have forgotten that the signal is not provided so you can announce what you have done, but to prepare the adjacent traffic for what you are planning to do, and that it is still your responsibility to make sure that your planned move is safe, before you make it.

My pet peeve is people who cannot stand in line! Remember the old (not p.c.) expression, "Chinese fire drill"? That's Germans, whether using public transit, at the baker's, or driving in a "no passing zone"!
