The shampoo thread got me thinking about other haircare issues, mainly damage from using heat products (such as flat irons and hair dryers).

I use a hair dryer, flatiron, and steam curlers DAILY (trust me, it's necessary with my hair!!!). Needless to say, my ends split and feel fried. I try to get my ends trimmed every 3 months or so, but do any of y'all know of any great products that help protect hair against heat damage? I tried that Thermasilk stuff and it's a joke!

Yes!!!!! I know of a GREAT product that I would recommend to ANYONE! I also blow dry and straighten my hair on a daily basis and frankly, I can't afford to get my haircut as much as I'd like to so I was forced to find something to help my poor, dried out hair along. The product is by Philosophy and is called The Big Blow Off. http://www.philosophy.com/webapp/wcs...tegoryId=24037
It comes in a large bottle and is VERY reasonably priced for how long that bottle will last you (I went through one bottle in a little over a year). It's very light and works wonders on hair. Since I started using this stuff I also started getting TONS more compliments on how shiny my hair looks. I'm actually at the very bottom of my bottle right now and need more, I'm paranoid of being without it -- THAT'S how much I love the stuff! Also, Philosophy has tons of other wonderful products. Last time I ordered from them online they sent me a whole bunch of large samples of other stuff as well, which was GREAT! As far as being sold in a store, the only place I can think of that sells it in store is Sephora. You MUST try this stuff though Amy!

Amy, I use a hairdryer and flatiron regularly. I've tried about everything and I found that the best product I've used was also the cheapest. I use VO5 Miracle! Mist. It's a heat defense conditioning spray. You spray it lightly on each strand before you iron it with a flatiron. It works wonders!!!!!! I CHALLENGE anyone to find a split end on my head!!!
I can go 2 months between cuts with it.

This is going to sound so pathetic...but I really wish I could afford a cut every 2 months!
I'm lucky if I get one every 4.
Which, as you can imagine, is why that stuff I mentioned gets me so excited. Without it I would be one dried out mess. Being a college kid can be so pathetic sometimes.

Oh Hon, I definitely remember the lean college kid days!!!!
I COULD go longer than 2 months without a cut BUT I'm really really picky with my hair now. It's just one of those "quirks" I've accumulated with age. I don't like seeing ONE spit end. I get it cut every 2 months "just in case" there's a split end or two lurking around. AND it's one of my few "pamper time" indulgences.

In this corner, in the red gloves we have...THE BIG BLOWOFF!
In this corner, donning the black gloves, we have V05 MIRACLE! MIST! It's a fight to the death! A REAL grudge match!

I trust both of your recommendations so much. Oh the turmoil!

I know how it is to be quirky about hair.
I'm a nutcase about it! My hair used to be totally out of control back when I was in public school and now that I've gotten older and learned how to control it, I'm a total freak about how it looks! I would totally get mine cut every two months too if I could. It's one of the things I'm looking forward to about having a real job! hehe

Hey, I like Miracle! Mist but I don't feel THAT strongly about it
. Hey, here's what we'll do. We'll both bring a bottle of our stuff to the meetup, lock them together in a room and see which one makes it out in one piece

Kelly DOES have very pretty hair, I must say. It would seem to me that no matter which way you go you'll be set.
Perhaps you could start with one and then try the other when that one's out, then report back to us!

That cracked me up! I could just picture the three of us standing outside the door, speculating about what was going on in there.

This is becoming too funny y'all!
I'm so excited about our meetup- I think we'll all have a great time!
Since I can just pick it up in the store real easily (no Sephora in Savannah, we ain't terribly high-class
), I'm going to give the V05 a shot. But I did look at the Philosphy website and $14 for a product that'll last and last and do a great job isn't bad at all!

I just made an appt. to get my split ends trimmed this afternoon. I think when my hairdresser sees how fried they are, he's going to faint

Speaking of the meetup...do we have any details about that yet?

I blowdry, flat iron, and then curl the ends of my hair. I used the thermasilk, moisture infusing, and it helped, but I also added a leave in conditioner/detangler and that helped with the dry ends. Try a moisture infusing conditioner like Kellye or Katherine mentioned and apply it a little more aggressively to just the ends. You may also want to look into a leave in conditioner as well, and apply it every other day, as opposed to everyday to avoid greasy looking hair.
I have been using the pantene brunette expressions, and that is actually working for me, and not leaving my hair looking dry. Do you use ceramic based irons? My flat iron is a ceramic iron, and that captures your hairs moisture instead of frying it out. My curling iron is the same way: ceramic. After I blow dry, I turn the blow dryer on the coolest setting and run it through my hair. This is supposed to close the cuticle to the hair, and avoid dry out also. It gives your hair a shiny appearance.
Good Luck.

Thanks Diane
I use Brunette Expressions, too! So far, I haven't seen it do anything very exciting to my hair (I'm almost through with my first bottle of it).

I don't use a ceramic iron, but I want one. There's one I like that sells for about $100, so I'll probably get it once I'm feeling rich. Thanks for the reminder, though
I'd forgotten all about the need for a ceramic flatiron until you mentioned it. My hairdresser told me about them a while back, but it was in one ear and out the other.
