I have been hearing a lot about the proposed Pet Animal Welfare Statute recently as well as a huge variety of opinions, so I thought I'd start asking people a few questions to get a better idea of the opposition and support for the statute.

If you all would be willing to offer you take on this proposed legislation I would really appreciate it.

Here are my questions:

1. How did you find out about PAWS 2005?
2. Is your opinion generally positive or negative to the proposed legislation?
3. What do you find most valuable about the statute?
4. What do you find most concerning about the statute?
5. If you have objections to PAWS, how could the statute be altered to address your concerns most effectively?
6. Do you support or oppose PAWS?
7. Any additional comments?

Thanks in advance for your help! I'm looking forward to finding out in more detail about everyone's feelings on the topic.

I hope by surveying a variety of people involved with companion animals we might be able to get a better idea of how to address concerns, etc. to the parties working on the statute rather than presenting a rather helter skelter group of viewpoints.

Since I do not live in the US I don't think I am qualified to answer your questions. Yet IMO the proposed statute is a good one. I hope it gets passed.

PAWS 2005 "Extends animal welfare protections to address the sale of puppies and kittens over the Internet and through newspaper ads, closing a loophole that exempts those breeders as "pet stores." Many young kittens, puppies and other companion animals cross state lines and consumers have no opportunity to view the conditions the animals were bred in, which was the original intention of the Animal Welfare Act."

This is an important topic....does anyone have any opinions they'd care to share?

I found out about it on the Petfinder Message Board
I think is sounds good, anything that stops Puppy Mills and Back Yard Breeders, or at least has the Puppy Mills inspected sounds good to me.
I think Puppy Mills are the most horrendous facilities and to think they have no regulation at all makes me ill. Million and millions of dogs and cats are put to sleep every year and it is disgusting. Spay and Neuter please folks. Ok, I get down off the soap box now.
