My boyfriend's ex girlfriend bought Reilly for him and she has papers for him as a brown tabby maine coon.

I think they get alot more of the long hair around there neck as they get older, Rieily looks maine coon to me, but I am not an expert, I'm sure someone will be able to tell if Marty is.

Tabby is a color pattern. Maine Coon is a breed. Maine Coon cat can be a tabby.
Or can be many other colors.
The cat would only be a Maine Coon if both parents are Maine Coons.
Any mixed breed cat can be a tabby.

Well, tabbies are supposed to have an "M" on their foreheads. I've about decided that Narsil and Mithril (both classic tabbies, one blue and one brown) have runes on theirs, although looking at their pix in my siggy you can plainly see the "M's".

Classic tabbies have the "bullseye" markings on their sides, in longer haired cats (such as Maine Coons) it's not always really clear, although that's what the breeders strive for. Narsil is quite dark and his patterning shows up almost as random swirly marks on his sides.

Mackeral tabbies are what a lot of people refer to as "tiger" cats, they'll have up and down stripes on their sides, around their legs, and usually around their tails. It's named after the pattern of bones a mackeral fish has.

Tabby can come in any color. Brown in Maine Coons is the most common (and I just think it's the definitive Maine Coon,) but other colors such as red (most people would call it orange) blue, silver, and smoke can also occur.

I showed your picture to my niece and she absolutely thought it was a picture of Chuckie and Spyder!!

I alway's thought that my Cammie was part maine coon, but I think she is just a long haired tabby, she's such a pretty girl no matter what she is.

Maybe we should try to start something in the cat fancy that's common in the horse fancy, that of calling these cats Maine Coon type or Oriental type or Persian type. It's a matter of semantics, the only way you can know for sure that a cat is of a certain breed is as the previous poster pointed out, if it has papers with a recognized registry. Even calling a kitty a Maine Coon mix implies that you know that there's registered Maine Coons in the cat's ancestry and in most cases that's just not possible.

I don't think your cat is a Maine Coon, because I don't see tufts on the ears like the Maine Coon has. It's possible that your cat might had some Maine Coon in him, somewhere in his bloodlines, but I would say you have Domestic Long Hair that is Tabby in colouration.

I don't think ear-tufts could definitely be said to be what "makes" a Maine Coon
, they're just very desireable, like rosetted spots are preferred but not necessary in a Bengal. FWIW Melichus had no ear tufting (although he had ear "furnishings") and his sire was a Triple Grand Champion and Sire of Merit and his dam was a Champion. It's just the luck of the genetic roll.

RE: ear tufts...
While my boys Chuckie and Spyder are brothers...Chuckie looks like a Maine Coon but doesn't have ear tufts. Spyder looks nothing like a Maine Coon but does have the ear tufts!!

I was wondering about the ear tufts..
Sometimes I think Tucker has some Maine Coon, because he is a big-boned, gentle furry boy, but he has no ear tufts.

back in Laguna Woods, CA after a 2 yr absence
I had a Maine Coon who has now passed. The previous owner had lost the papers. He had been named Rocky but I called him Rumpus

He also had no ear tufts

Then I adopted a found cat who did not look like much but somebody had said he looked like a Maine Coon
Unfortunately even after 4 months he just could not get along with the resident cats and I had to re-home him, he was ca. 2 years old

By then he looked like this (that's what good food and loving care does)
He had gotten his ruff and whiskers and "eye brows" and did not have such a sad expression anymore.

Now he has been with his new mom (a match made in heaven) for 3 months and he is even bigger, has even more hair and is totally happy here you can see his magnificent tail and the tabby pattern, he is also cow hocked and splay-footed like so many Maine Coons are, but it does not keep him from jumping higher than my other cats can

this is what he looks like now, with even more hair and his ruff is magnificent, the vet thinks he's a pure bred

  in his new home

this pic is sideways, he looks real sweet

This boy, too, has no ear tufts. I don't think it's a requirement for a Maine Coon as I have seen others who did not have them either and they had papers.
