I have a Kia mini van, my parents a truck,my brother has a honda.
All cars did good. BUT you could smell the brakes on some of the mountain passes. We like to drive around and all the cabins we have rented were high in the mountains. We like the view.

Well, I need to look more closely at Gatlinburg, then! My dream would be a cabin of a panoramic mountainview. Ahhhh. After a few days there, I'd probably never return to Savannah!

Well, Bradley and I spent a couple few hours last night looking at cabins and we've narrowed it down to 3:
http://www.barefoot.com/ilinks/v3/av...6/2005&pUnit=1
This is the link. The 3 that we like are "Fishing Bear", "Above the Clouds", and "Rest Stop."
We settled on Blue Ridge, GA because one of my best friends and her husband live in Atlanta, GA and they are going to stay with us in the cabin one night (they've never met Bradley, so I'm excited about this).
Out of the 3 we've narrowed it down to, which one do y'all like best?

The only problem is the drive. It's about 8 hours from Savannah (north GA and Asheville are about 6). My little Saturn only has about 100hp and Bradley's truck is a 4-wheel drive, but it's not very comfy for long distances

But I love Gatlinburg so much and there is a lot to do, so if we find the perfect deal, we may end up there.

And yes, I am VERY jealous that you live so close to that city!!!
Just a suggestion but if one of you is over 25 you might look in to renting a car and leaving yours at home if you do it right it really isnt that expensive and you dont have to worry about yours breaking down or being stolen or broken into. Just a thought.

LOL, I'm 25 and Bradley's 26 (we're older than we sound)
. Yeah, we may rent a car regardless, but I think now we're going to be staying in the Blue Ridge area of GA.

Those look great Amy! You've definitely got a tough decision on your hands. Each one has some stand out quality that the others don't!

Above The Clouds seems to have the nicest decor. It also sounds like it would have a beautiful view!
The best thing about Fishing Bear is DEFINITELY the location to all that great stuff to do! The decor isn't as nice (for my tastes...heck you might like it better than the other for all I know), but the outside of the cabin is so interesting looking!
Rest Stop has some gorgeous views. Especially when you look at the 360 view of Deck 3. The inside ispretty nice as well.

I don't know Amy! They all are great for different reasons. How close are Above The Clouds and Rest Stop to all of the activities mentioned in Fishing Bear?

We've stayed in Maggie Valley, NC several times. Its a smaller vacation town about 30 min from Asheville. Its close to everything you've mentioned that you are interested in...white water rafting, outdoor stuff, shopping, etc. All the people are great and the company we've used to find cabins have *lots* to choose from. We have stayed in Maggie Valley using this company 3-4 times with no complaints. Please take a look! I've stayed in Gatlinburg before as well, but prefer the "small town" atmosphere of Maggie Valley more.

Amanda, Maggie Valley sounds lovely! I've never even heard of it before! I'll take a look before we commit to these cabins.

Katherine, I like the Fishing Bear cabin for the same reason you do- the outside looks so neat. But my #1 fave is Above the Clouds. I love the decor AND the view!

Bradley loved Angler's Alley because you can "fish from the porch." But I convinced him the mountain views are worth staying at a different one
I called the property mgr. and he said that the cabins we like are about 15 minutes to a big lake where there is lots of trout fishing and that's all that really matters to Bradley

As long as there's a hot tub, a nice view, something to hike, and a fridge to keep my beer cold, I'm a happy camper
.

Oh but wow Maggie Valley is absolutely breathtaking!!!

BUT...so are the Blue Ridge mountains and at least this way my friend and her hubby can join us
I'm going to double-check with Bradley once he's off the boat today, but I think Above the Clouds has our names written all over it!

Amanda, Maggie Valley sounds great!! I, for one, really appreciate the tip. My hubby & visited the Gatlinburg area, and it was indeed beautiful, but a bit populated for my tastes (If I go on a 4 hour hike, and see more than 8 people, I'm bummed - 2 folks per hour on an established trail is about my max), so I'll suggest Maggie Valley. He loves to travel, just whereever, as long as I make the arrangements! And Amy, I'm so happy for you!! I can hardly wait to hear all about it & see (most) of the pics!

I grew up in Knoxville, drove to Gatlinburg when I was bored sometimes. Used to be hard core into church and stayed in a friend's condo up there a couple of times for retreats. The condo was beautiful but would be terribly expensive... it had several bedrooms, two stories, and a monster master suite... with jacuzzi tub (and a hot tub by the pool which we used in the dead of winter).

If you get to go there, play some Indiana Jones mini golf for me! I'm more than 500 miles away and for some stupid reason I miss that indoor golf course!
