As for your outrageous statement above, I will say this; it has been proven that Native Americans and American Eskimos have a GENETIC trait that makes them highly susceptible to alcoholism. If that isn't an example of an inherited personality trait in humans then I don't know what is.
Back to the dogs:
THE AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB recognises inheritable personality traits in dogs. If they didn't why would they list "Temperment" in their descriptions of the breeds. Here is an example for you:http://www.akc.org/breeds/chow_chow/index.cfm
And for the record, I never said anything about banning Pit Bulls. Banning Pit Bulls is a blanket punishment, where because of several individuals who could not be responsible and control their dogs all Pit Bull Owners will be punished. Of course this is "not fair" but do you have a better suggestion?
I only pointed out that is is a fact that disposition is inheritable to a certain degree.
Here are some links to affirm my position on the Inherited Personality Traits:http://www.homeagainid.com/news/arti...?storyid=10600
I highlight the paragraph: "Selective breeding has increased the odds that dogs of a particular breed will be predisposed toward certain complex behaviors, such as herding or pointing, and personality traits, such as aggressiveness, playfulness and fear."http://www.pawsitivesolutions.net/he...nttobreed.html
Specifically: "...too many dogs with inherited personality problems, such as aggression or shyness or even yappiness..."http://www.chowwelfare.com/cciw/tempeval.htm
Specifically: "Inherited problems are there for the duration. Personality is as inherited as coat color or conformation. The dog has been genetically programmed to think and behave in a certain manner. The problems can be modified and often made better but they never really go away."http://www.angelpaws.org/adopting.htm
Specifically: "What a dog was bred for will give you a hint at what some of their personality traits are. Many a well meaning person has had to give up their pet because they didn't consider the inbred personality traits of their chosen breed."
I could go on quoting more sources but I think you get the idea. My point is, Personality traits *ARE* inherited and the AKC all the breeders I have found on the internet seem to recognise this.
People like you who insist that personality is not an inheritable trait are using that belief to try to "fix" the problem. If inherited agression is not the issue and irresponsible owners are, then you have a chance at trying to "educate" owners of these dogs and point out to the media that it is the poor innocent dogs that are being taken advantage of. Once you recognise that agression is an inherited trait you will understand why people want to ban these dogs.
You can't tell me that my friend's blue heeler puppy doesn't have inherited personality traits. No one taught her to be agressive and start nipping at the horse's heels to try to herd them. It is ingrained in her little brain, and guess what, that instinct is inherited. You don't breed herding dogs to herding dogs and get a dog with the personality of a Golden Retreiver. No matter how hard you try to make that herding dog have the personality of a Golden Retreiver, it's not going to happen. Think about it.
