OK, I have no clue what they're called, but I read something somewhere about an alternative to declawing being to have nail covers or something put on a cat's nails? Anyone know what I'm talking about? How often does this need to be done and how much does it cost. I have problem scratching in one of my five felines, and living in a rental I'm extremely nervous about it! I have scratching posts galore and a couch that is one big scratching post, but she just seems to gravitate to the doorways

They're called Soft Paws. There's also another similar brand called Soft Claws. You can find them at Petsmart or Petco. Check out the Soft Paws site, they have instructions on how to use them, i think they last about like 3 months or so.
Good luck!

You can also see them in action here. One of the members here used it on her cat and posted her feedback. Her kitty looks really stylish too!

Soft Paws have saved my life!
(not to mention my furniture, doors and skin!) I am very very very against declawing (assited on one too many a declawing surgery to be ok with it any longer), but my little monster was destroying my skin and furniture, so I bought soft claws in clear for him... the package usually comes with a 4 month supply of caps and 2 tubes of glue... the caps fall off as the nail sheds - I believe I paid $15 per pack at petsmart. You may need assistance applying the caps at first until your kitty gets used to it - I had to harness and leash Ollie and have my boyfriend hold him the first time, now he knows when one falls off, the nail gets clipped and re-capped... They are absolutely one of the best cat products invented!! I'm also renting and now have no worries about it... Oliver still uses his scratching post on a regular basis, especially when he feels that his nails are shedding.

Please forgive me for diverting the thread, but I love the picture of your cat that's on all your posts, BuzbyJLC10. It's funny!

Aw, thanks so much! It's my favorite picture of him so far: it's my desktop and in my wallet, hahaha... I took it during Christmas time with my dad's awesome digital camera - most of the pics I get of him turn out blurry, lol... he had decided to make a pair of my PSU sweatpants into a nest on top of my bed and just had this look like "Anything you leave around is mine to claim, don't even attempt to move me!"
