I recently adopted a stray and gave him a dose of some flea medication. He is always outside. I don't like the idea of using a "pesticide" but will if I have too. I have 2 other indoor cats and have niticed them scratching lately. I have heard that garlic works well, but have no idea...garlic powder, raw, or what ever. Anyone else use this method or something else organic as a flea repellent?

Not sure about what organic things would be - but garlic is toxic to cats - so please don't use that!

I don't know of anything organic you can use. Garlic is not safe for cats.

It's best to get your flea treatment from your vets office and not use anything over the counter.

i saw a holiday program recently saying garlic as an insect repellent (for humans anyway) was just a myth.

i assume people believe it to be a detterent as it thins the blood bt as fleas can live for a year without food i doubt thin blood will deter them!

the best thing you can do abot fleas is ring your vet and see what they reccomend.

Those herbal flea repellent contain some oils that cats just do not like.
Not sure if it is the citronella or the eucalyptus, but most cats simply do not like the stuff.

  • PLEASE do not use anything over the counter unless you speak to your vet first.
  • Read all label instructions and follow them.
  • Do NOT use dog/horse/sheep products on cats
  • Beware of counterfiet Advantage/Frontline etc... which is why you should purchase these from your vet.

I did use Frontline( its been a few weeks ) so he is about due for another dose. I did get it from my vet. Guess I should have been more clear on that.

Great! I use Frontline on Dori.

We just stress it because it is so important. The first time I used flea treatment on Dori I called her vet after because she licked it. The vet yelled for me to wash Dori asap and then call the office back. She explained that many cats had terrible reactions to the over the counter product I had used and many had died from it. It's scary to go through that so I make sure to warn people when I can that the over the counter stuff isn't safe.
