Condolences it is so hard to lose any pet, especially one you have loved for 16 years! I am so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you are here among friends at the CatSite! We definitely understand your feelings.

There's never any words for something as sad as your kitty being no more.
When my beloved Tess died at age 22, this poem was sent to me:

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever

Oh don't feel guilty at all! He obviously had a major 'event' overnight while you were asleep, and you could not have even realized it, let alone done anything, and it was just his time after all - at least he didn't have to go on for months being propped up by meds, etc. just to make you feel better (like some do with their pets). Just be happy you did have each other for so long.

I am so so sorry about your loss. I am sitting here crying for you right now. I bawled like a baby for 3 weeks over the loss of my golden retriever over Memorial Day weekend, and my kitten, Clooney, who died after I had him for only 4 days. Why does losing someone you love so deeply have to hurt so bad? One thing I find very interesting, animals don't want to die around their owners. Clooney could barely get his breath, and it wasn't until I handed him to the vet tech that he looked at me, kissed me and allowed himself to die. Zuzu, my golden died at the vet while being boarded. She died of a massive heart attack. It as such a shock. Again, she didn't die in our presence.

Hugs, Rebecca

Thank you all for your kind soothing words of comfort, its good to know that other cat lovers can relate to what one goes through when one loses a furry freind, and companion. When i went into work and mentioned what had happened over the weekend, some of the guys reactions surprised me somewhat, the typical response was "well its only a cat!" i did get a couple of sympathetic responses, but on the whole most were dismissive of my sorrow. Thats why its great to be able to correspond with people who have time, and understanding, and can find a few kind words this experience has helped me to come to terms with a cats imortality, and now i know that although he is no longer her in his phisical presence, he will live forever within my heart. his spiritual side will be near me at all times, and i take comfort in knowing that he will be there to greet me when my time comes.

I am so sorry for your loss. But I also wanted you to know that your story about Mawser has helped me with the loss of one of my little dear furry ones just the other day. You are absolutely correct about it being so comforting and healing to know that others feel the same way we do about losing our dear pets and companions. Bless you.

You are right, people who have not had cats are not lucky enough to have felt the love they give. I am sorry for your loss, when we lost my parents cat who I shared custoday with just the cat food aisle made me cry.

when i read that, my heart just stopped cold. i now have a kitty and i have had her for 7 months, and from my first look at her, she has been the center of my life (well one of them anyways). i do not think i could bear it if my kitty died, at any age. you have my entire sympathy, and my heart goes out to you and mawser. but remember, cats have 9 lives, and that was only his first. at the instant he passes, a new kitten was being born with his same spirit, and that will happen 8 more times after that. once he has reached his ninth rebirth, he will settle and find a cozy spot on a cloud to purr and sleep and be happy until the end of time.

well, thats how i like to think of it, for i could not bear it any other way. i hope you feel better on that note, and who knows! maybe you will adopt the newborn mawser another day.

 RIP, sweet Mawser.

I'm glad you are able to come here and realize that many people don't see that losing a sweet furbaby as trivial. I lost my sweet Tugger very suddenly at age 7 to a bloodborn pathogen called cytauxzoonosis, and over three years later it is still hard to deal with. I still cry. But while there will never be a replacement, there will be more sweet kitten faces to help ease the way down the road. And lots of friends here on TCS. I definitely wish I had a community like this back then to support and validate the feelings you are experiencing.

I noticed you felt guilty that you weren't there the last few moments; and wanted to make sure you knew something... When they're in pain, many cats are very private creatures and like to deal with it in their own way, in peace and quiet; they're okay with you being there, if they trust you; but it's the peace and quiet that's the most important to them. That's why they hide away when they are sick. If it makes any difference, I think your cat was probably okay with things the way they happened. It's that sixteen years you spent with him that matters--all those good times you two had together, a full life for a cat.

I'm sorry about your loss. Take care of yourself. Most of us have been there too and we know this is a hard time for any cat person. Just hang in there, OK?

Losing a pet is never ever easy, and I don't care what anyone may tell you, time does not necessarily make the hurt go away. When our beloved Ace - a boston terrior had to be put to sleep from cancer at age 14 - (This was in 2004-- 7 years ago) and on December 8. I held him while they put him to sleep and to this day, I still hurt and long for my baby. I cry alot, and every time I look at his picture, I cry. On the anniversary of his death, forget it. I am not fit to be around anyone or anything that day and generally stay in bed crying and praying that God protect my baby in heaven until I can be with him.

It isn't easy, but you did the right thing by taking him to the vet. he obviously had a stroke of some sort or even a heart attack and was in pain.Anyway, the following poem really was helpful when we lost Ace:

[size=+1]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I went through the same thing a couple of weeks ago with my 15 1/2 year old cat Harley. He was my best friend and I'm still crying thinking about it.

So, everybody here understands what you are going through.

I did get a rescue kitten the other day - not as a replacement, because Harley can't be replaced - but to have a new companion to take care of and love. It's been very helpful to me and I like to know that I saved an animal from a bad life. Although I did not adopt him until this past Friday, the kitten (Magnus) was also rescued the day after Harley died so I kind of feel like that maybe means something. Or not. but it's nice to think about. so, maybe, when the time is ready for you, adopting a rescue is something to think about when the time is right.

I am empathizing with you completely today as my 13 yr old kitty had to be euthanized yesterday Nov 28 and I'm still grieving. I am so sorry for your loss. It really hurts so bad. I spent the morning sorting through tons of photos that I had taken of my sweet Little Kitty and it helped to see him in happier times. Here's to fond memories of our beloved babies.
