Ok. I thought this was really funny to see, and had to take a picture.

My mom and I went to North Bay Friday afternoon for a little shopping and decided to cross the boreder to Quebec for lunch. It was only about 60k away.

So we stopped in this little town right across the Ottawa River and found a nice place for lunch. After lunch I went into the bathroom and was really surprised to see an Ashtray next to the toilet paper thing. I was laughing my butt off. When my mom came in the bathroom I was like "Look at that! How much do you smoke if you have to do it while sitting in there?" and I told her to step aside while I took a picture with my cell phone. Behind my mom this other woman came in the bathroom and used the other stall.

When we came out the she was talking in French and pointed at us and was laughing with the people she was sitting with.

I told my mom, "what are they laughing about? They are the ones with the ashtray next to the toilet!!"

I guess things are different just crossing into another province. I found it super strange since in Ontario we don't have smoking in bars, restarants, and really any other public place. People have to go outside to designated smoking areas. I know in Quebec they can pretty much light up anywhere (IMO I think is kind of gross).

Here is the picture, let me know if anyone else finds this odd and amusing. Everyone I emailed the picture to thought it was.

My how times have changed! I remember when smoking was still allowed on airplanes and, well, just about everywhere. But I must say...I have never seen ashtrays by the toilets in public restrooms! (Private residences I have, but they weren't bolted to the wall! LOL)

Movin' on up!
I remember when there were ashtrays in public bathroom stalls. There still are, in casinos.

Blech. I'm hoping the smoking ban in public places like restaurants and bars will pass here in Chicago. I got spoiled living in NY--I hate going out at night and coming home smelling like an ashtray.

I smoke, but I've always smoked outside.
I stopped going to the bars and restaurants that allowed smoking because even I was offended!

I remember when there were "ashtrays" in restrooms. I always thought they were more to set your ciggy down on as you do your business. I also remember the plastic toilet paper dispensers with burn marks where someone had set a cigarette down.

Ah, jeez, now I need to get to a scanner. On my cross-country move we stopped at a rest area in eastern Montana that had a huge trashcan outside the public restrooms, labelled "BUTTS ONLY"
HAD to take a pic of that one!

I've seen many, many, many TP dispensers with burn marks, usually in bars, and I've seen my share of commode-side ashtrays, too. I find both disgusting, but not as disgusting as a pile of butts on the asphalt at a stoplight.

Here... or There... Hmmm
You know... My thought on this is... I guess I would rather smell smoke or a match than whatever might have been stinking up the place before!!!

That's quite common in the UK to find ash trays in public loos - I think mainly in some older bars and nightclubs etc! I do find it funny too. As a smoker (yeah I know) I would never dream of smoking on the loo

Surely you would have to finish your ciggy before you even attempt to finish what you have just done on the loo? Would be painful if you got burnt too!
