Hello,
I'm new to the cat site and I'm also a new, proud mommy. However I'm having trouble with one of my kittens. I have 2 boys. They are 4 months old. I noticed 2 days ago one of my kitties panting. I had never seen this so I immediately took him to the vet. He checked him out and the Dr. said he was in good health. He said it must have been due to the hot weather. He was given a shot of liquids to re-hydrate him. He instructed me to keep in cool and give him plenty of water. Today, I came home and my house was cool. I left the AC on for them but my kitten is still panting. Should I worry? Does he need to go back to the vet? I'm just really worried.

Welcome to TCS....when my cat was a kitten he used to pant a lot because he would over exert himself...chasing, jumping etc. I had also told my vet who said just to monitor the situation...that was 7 years ago and my guy is ok....however, I'm no vet. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to answer your question.

Welcome to TCS

I agree with everyone above me saying that I think your kitty may just be over-active as all kittens are. I wouldnt worry to much, but of course I am also no vet so keep an eye on him and if you are really worried put through a call to your vet.

so glad you joined us - can we see some photos of your 2? we love new kittens here

Open mouth panting could be signs of heatstroke, or even a warning that the kitten might have a problem with his heart or lungs. If the kitten is playing hard in the heat of the day, then you would expect him to pant. Is your home cool enough inside and is there enough fresh water out?

Welcome to TCS!
One of my boys, JC, pants alot, too, esp. after running. I worried about an enlarged heart, but the vet checked him out and couldn't find anything wrong. JC's just turned one year and still panting, esp. in this heat. I hope that all is well with your boy, too! By the way, JC has good color, good coat condition, likes to play & loves to eat, seems to use the box just fine - all things that the vet told me to keep track of.

Yes he does. Since it's two of them, they run around the house at full speed anywhere from 30 mins to an hour. They chase each other around. I've kept my house very cool the past few days and have been monotiring them both. I did notice that the one that is panting started to pant after playing around. I hope it is just that. I followed up with the vet and he thinks it might just be a combination of the hot weather and his playing around.

Thank you all for your help and concern.

Glad to have joined....

You can read a little more on my reply to Stormy. But yes, I have kept the house cool since I took him to the vet. And I do always have fresh water out for them in different areas of the house.

Please please please make sure your vet listens for a heart murmer if you ever see your kitty doing this if it's not immediately after running or playing very hard. That is one of the symptoms of HCM, a genetic heart condition. If it is, and they catch it early, it can be treated.. if left unnoticed, the kitty could go into heart failure
