I'm in between breaking down my 55 gallon tank. I've lost another fish today (my male Blue Ram
) and I am not a happy camper. I think the substrate has gone south, and is forming toxic gases ... geh, I know it smells like a swamp!

And I walked into the den yesterday to discover that my sarassa comet (totally different tank) that I've had for 3 years had gone belly-up.

I've not had a good month, fishwise.

I don't know a thing about fishes I'm afraid. I think I'll heD DOWN to the basement and woprk on a cat tree and see If I can avoid smacking this finger for the 3rd time. No one can say I'm not persistent, not too bright perhaps but persistent. See all a bit later.

Cindy...I am sorry to hear about your fish. Three years is a long time.

Aww, poor fishie.
I had a fish in college, a Beta (siamese fighting fish) whom I named Yoko Ono. She lived for...a couple of months? Not very long.

Bettas don't have a very long life span, and the pet shops tend to not want them to resell until they're bigger and thus flashier to begin with, so there's no telling how much "life" is left in them when you buy them. The wife of one of Hubby's friends was telling me that she thought she'd overfed her betta and killed it, but on further questioning I found she'd had him for almost 3 years. Long time for a betta! Of course there's always exceptions; I also heard of one betta that made it to 9 years. Hubby's betta "Cougar" is at least 2.5 years old now. We keep wondering how much longer he'll last.

I've got 90% of the plants out of the big tank, and about 75% of the water. Most of the fish have been moved to my 29. I think there's 3 more otocinclus (the water's cloudy, hard to see) catfish to be moved but I can't catch the b*ggers! I'll be draining the rest of the water out of it tomorrow, hopefully I can catch up with them then.

Good grief Cindy...you have a major project going on.
Post pictures when it's done. I bet it will look really great.

It'll be a while
. I've got substrate coming Monday, and although this stuff is specifically for a planted tank (and I'm not going to say how much I spent on something which serves the same function as, basically, dirt,) I'm sorta going back and forth about actually setting the tank back up as a planted tank. It can get VERY complex. I've got Co2 injection, a canister filter, high lighting ... I've heard it said that it can actually be WORSE as far as work and the possibility of screwing up than a Reef Tank (not really sure I buy that, but still...) When it looks good, it looks VERY good, but out of the 10 months or so that I've had the tank set up, it's really looked its best only 1 or 2 months. This may be one of those things that I chalk up as a "learning experience" although I'd really hate to go back to plastic plants now ...

Cindy, I'm pretty sure you've already seen this, but just in case. . .
I found this site thru another online bb I frequent. I've never taken the plunge, but I'm keeping this in my fav's just in case I decide to.
Planted Tank Resources

I have not had good luck with Bettas - I've gone thru FIVE in two years
My friend Scott, however, still has the first one I bought him when I bought my first two. I've decided I'm not meant to own a betta, so I'm sticking to community fish.

I'm going tomorrow to buy a couple more Cardinal Tetras for my lonely pair. I have Von Rio's, Lemons, Glo-Lights and the two Cardinal tetras, as well as 4 danios, and algae eater and a Chocolate Albino Pleco in my 37-gal HI. Happy, happy fishes, and I really like my fake plants for now.

Thanks, actually, that's one I've not run across. I have found a forum that is very similar in camaraderie to this one, with the emphasis on planted tanks --- I'm RoseHawke over there too
... except I apparently don't run my mouth (keyboard) as much since I've been a member for 1.5 years and still haven't quite hit my 500th post.

www.plantedtank.net

And I'm beginning to appreciate fake plants
