Scared of outdoors?

I had my cat for several months before this happened. One day I had family over, and most of them were outside on the porch. I was holding and loving on Marat, and thought I'd step outside with them for just a minute. I knew Marat wasn't interested in going outside, not that I would let him, but I didn't expect his reaction. He went wild, clawing me to get away, frantic. He was scared out of his mind for some reason. I held onto him somehow and my sister opened the door so I could get back in. Took hours to get him to calm down. A week or so later, my sister had pulled into the garage, with the door still open to the outside. The normally mellow Marat was in my arms again, and I cracked the door to the garage open to yell she had a phone call. Again, Marat came unglued. Anyone else have a cat so afraid of outdoors? I had no intention of making him anything other than an indoor kitty, but I still find it weird. Why would he be so terrified?

It's not weird. My cat is scared of the outside too. My neighbor's cat sits on the balcony all the time, so I thought I would take my cat out on the balcony. Now, my cat loves to sit by the balcony (inside) and look out the window, so I thought he would like it.
But as I took him into my hands and tried to open a balcony's door, the cat freaked out and tried to get away from me. So, obviously, he is happy with just looking outside and has no desire to personally go outside.

Leo will only go outside if I'm holding him. Otherwise, he's terrified and will actually back slowly away from the door if I happen to have it open. He prefers watching the great outdoors from his windowsill in the kitchen. So, I think it's normal, especially in adult cats that have always been indoors. I don't know anything about Leo's past before last year, but I can only assume that he must have been owned.

Lola is still a kitten, so she would probably be intruiged, which is why I never let her even close to the back door. (She was born outside, orphaned and rescued when she was a couple days old. They found her during a snowstorm we had in late March, she already had ringworm.

Limerick was scared of the outside, but then the weather got really nice out. Now he likes it as long as he has a house to come back to.

Raven too likes to look outside - but to actually go outside? Nope, not her.... no way, not going there

My YY yowls very loudly in the winter time if I even go near the door with her. But she loves to go out on her leash in the summer.

Mellie is afraid of going outside, too. The shelter I adopted her from told me she was picked up as a stray, so she probably had a bad experience out there.
