Hello, I'm new here. My 1 year old Bengal kitty Pearl is supposed to give birth anytime now. I've been pouring over all of the "threads" in this subject area. I think I'm ready. I have all the stuff, two nesting boxes, paper towels, lots of soft terry towels and wash cloths (freshly laundered and double rinsed), a heating pad, betadine solution, etc.

And I'm so scared. I've hand raised kittens before (rescues), but have never had a cat give birth before.

I guess I'm just asking for some moral support ... I've been reading all of your messages to and from each other ...

Please put good thoughts out there for Pearl and I ...

Sending good vibes. I hope you don't mind me asking...but since you mentioned your cat is a bengal, I'm assuming she has breeding rights and that you are in touch with the breeder you acquired her through. There are a lot of registered breeders on this board and it is always good to ensure you are following proper breeding protocol.

Good Luck,

Katie

I have been in contact with Pearl's breeder. She's who we we bred her with. And while she's very friendly and all, she's been of little help in the area of "What do we do now?"

Our vet is pretty matter of fact about all of this too, I've gotten a lot of "Oh, she'll do what comes naturally ..." but having read so many of your members messages, and about kittens seemingly fine and then dying a few days later ... gracious, I'm a basket case!

Also, please excuse my ignorance, but what protocols are you speaking of?

Thanks again for your time, I really appreciate it.

Wendy...you may want to take a quick peek in the breeders forum. I know there are a few bengal breeders who post here and perhaps they can give you advice since the breeder you acquired your bengal through has not been very helpful. By protocols I'm referring to the ensurinig that your female has her papers and if you plan on becoming a breeder full time....making sure you have everything in place for your cattery. The breeders on this board (and I'm not one of them) are very good at explaining the ropes...but they are also very good at asking questions in order to make sure you are the best breeder you can be.

In addition to posting here, the best thing you can do right now will be to find someone in your area who is also a breeder of Bengals who will be more responsive than the breeder of your cat has been. Do you know of any upcoming cat shows in your area?? I've heard it's a good place to meet someone who could then become your mentor.

Katie, this is my first and last time breeding a cat. I've always been a firm believer in spay and neuter! In fact, Pearl is the only cat I've ever actually purchased. I've had many sweet and beloved feline friends that somehow we just "found" each other. I let my husband and daughter talk me into this. While I can't say I'm sorry we bred Pearl, let's just say I'm having major reservations about it now! Thanks so much for your advice!

Oh...ok...wasn't trying to make an assumption. Still, bengals are a special breed of cat and as such...the breeder here may still be able to help you even if this is your only litter. I suspect they would be able to give you more peace of mind then either your vet or your breeder did. BTW...I'm a huge advocate of spay/neuter myself.
Everyone here is really helpful and I'm sure others will give you some good vibes as well.

I'll absolutely check out the breeder area here. I didn't realize Bengals were considered a special breed, other than they're so pretty.

Wendy...I'm not a breeder so don't quote me on the "special" breed.
What I was trying to get at...rather poorly I might add..is that since they are a purebred cat...there may be some advice that the breeders can give that those of us who have no purebred cat breeding experience wouldn't be able to provide. BTW..they are VERY PRETTY. If you get a chance and if you don't mind...we LOVE pictures on this board.
