Urine Smell in Carpet

I've been speculating that my girl has used the house as her litterbox for the last week. I have found one spot - well...she showed me where it was. When you got down to the carpet - you could still smell the urine.

I have since checked every other room she has acess to with a black light. I have found a lot of stains, but none of them smell any longer [to me]. Some of the carpet is 23 years old while the rest is 12 years old...so a lot of stains are expected.

My question...how long will the urine smell stick around for a human to smell it. If she has been peeing outside the box, other than the 1 place I know for sure....it has only been in the last 5 days...so i wouldn't think the smell would have dissapated this quickly.

There are products you should buy that would get rid of the smell.

I have purchased a product to remove the stain.

My question is how long with the urine smell -- left untreated - remain for a human to smell. I'm trying to determine if the stains I'm seeing in this really old carpet are new or old? Like I said....issues with my current cat would have started only in the last 5 days when she started to get sick from anal sac impaction / constipation.

The only stain I found that had any scent to it at all was the scent my cat led me to. I had to get on my hands and knees to smell it...but it was really strong once I got my nose close to the spot.

Well, the more important question is how long can your cat smell it? Because it your cat can still smell it, it tells her that it's OK to go there again. The only way to eliminate it is to treat ALL the spots, no matter how old, with enzymatic cat urine cleaner.

I do plan on cleaning all the spots...but would hate to think that I have locked her a bathroom for "retraining" when she is not having an issue with peeing outside the box.

As stated...there ws only 1 small spot that I found that had any odor...and she led me to it.

I just don't want to blame her for something that she didn't do. All the spots that I'm seeing would be over 2 years old - if my nose would be any indicator...as she has NEVER peed outside the litter box in the 2 years I've owned her until now -- when she got sick.

Just wondering so I don't blame her for the actions of another animal.

I really don't know how you would be able to tell. Anyhow, try to remember where the stains are so you know if the new ones appear.

She's not going to blame you; nobody's going to blame you. It's just a matter of the spots being there and they need to be dealt with, that's all.
