Erm, maybe DIY isn't your thing...
FWIW I've had my share of black fingernails (from being whacked with a hammer.) So now I've graduated to pneumatic tools so I can REALLY hurt myself (not yet, touch wood.)
So it could be worse!

I second this technique! I used to whack myself all the time and then my husband (who is a professional scenic carpenter, so knows a few tricks) taught me this technique so he wouldn't have to be the only person in the house allowed to hammer!Originally Posted by RoseHawke
Okay, as long as we're talking about hammering techniques here (btw, I won't let the DH touch a hammer, the cussin's not worth it!) instead of holding the nail in the "normal" way to get its initial seat, take it and hold it between your index and middle finger (as if you were holding a cigarette in some 30's movie) with the head of the nail towards the palm side of your hand. IOW your hand is basically upside down. That way if you DO hit your fingers, you hit the fleshy part and it hurts a LOT less. Trust me on this. It'll feel awkward at first, but I actually find this is about the only way I can hold really small nails very efficiently, like brads or escutcheon pins.
