My family just adopted a two-year-old Bombay from the local shelter, and he's been at our house for a day, and has yet to relieve himself at all. He's been eating a fair amount, and had some water and all, and seems relatively happy (he's in a "safe room" from the kids; with bed, litterbox, food/water) insomuch as he comes to us for petting but hides most of the time otherwise.

My question, as a new cat owner, is how long can a cat hold out on any elimination before we should worry? He peed in the car on the way to the house yesterday afternoon, but nothing since.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Mine didnt pee for a day or two when we first got her.

Ring the vet for some (free) advice if your worried and take him in for a check if he hasnt gone within a couple of days.

could he have been going somewhere other than his litter box?

Thanks for the advice, I'm guessing that it's just the adjustment period, but I wanted to make sure. He definitely isn't going other places, either.

When we adopted our two year old, he wouldn't go to the bathroom either. But since we already had another cat, I brought a little of his litter and mixed it in with the new cat's litter. The new cat went to the bathroom right away. I was told by my vet that if a cat doesn't eliminate in 24 hours, they can get sick.

I would venture to say he is probably peeing somewhere besides the litter pan and you just haven't discovered it yet. Are you using the same litter he is used to?

UPDATE:

Henry used the box just a bit after I originally posted, and has used it often since. He never did go anywhere else, I guess he was just a bit nervous about the new surroundings.
