I just got Yahoo DSL as my computer is about 7 or so years old and AOL was WAY too big for it.

Everything was working fine untill I installed yahoo's Zone Alarm. NOW I cannot see what I type in my subject line of my emails, and my computer freezes so I SOMETIMES have to wait till it unfreezes to move my mouse or I have to shut it down manually. Yesterday I went to get into my mail box and as I clicked onto the mail thinging in my tool bar I got a blue screen of death saying an Exception had occured in WINDOWS. This happened 3 x before I could get into anything.

I called yahoo and of course they had no idea what was wrong but suggested I install a NEW Internet explorer.

Soooooo do you all think I should get a new IE or can yahoo DSL run on Opera or firefox and which would be better?

Definatly try firefox. its much nicer than IE, and more stable. But it sounds like you have other problems too. I would do a scan for spyware and other nasties before installing it
You can get Adaware free which does this for you.

My suggestion is Opera. Opera is so great. Safe. No Pop Ups and it offers viewing abilities that IE offers, and it's small efficent program, and it's much faster than IE, Netscape or any of those Mozilla based browsers.

Yes, Opera and Firefox will work with any DSL connection. Maybe you need to double check your wires and restart your computer. Also, do you need to log into your account? Zone Alarm could be keeping you from accessing the internet, although I have never had a problem with that particular program. If your problem started after installing Zone Alarm, I suggest uninstalling it and see if your computer works properly after that.

I've heard that there have been connectivity problems down here in SoCal with Yahoo's DSL. Here's a link discussing it. But if you just got it that might not be the problem. But getting an "offline" message is screwy.

I believe the problem you have is more than just the browser. I like Firefox for a browser.

Sounds to me like you have a trojan or virus on your computer. Run some antivirus and adware removers and see if it helps.

Hmmm I have Yahoo antivirus so I will check and see when it runs.
It seems like you have to have Internet Explorer as WELL as Firefox as when I tried to delete IE I did not have a tool bar and this morning I could not even access the internet.

I downloaded IE and so far (Knocking on wood) I am back online!

IE is part of windows, you won't truly delete it, only mess up your desktop

Zone Alarm does more harm than good, if you're running XP, you don't need it anyway.

As for browser pref. Firefox.

When I tried to delete IE I found I had no toolbars at the bottom of my screen and no wall paper.

With FIREFOX I cannot foremat my email - no fonts or colors to select. So is this that way with all emails with a firefox browser or just yahoo email with firefox browser?

So since I have DSL and my puter is on all hte time don't I need a firewall? Zone alarm was a firewall that I thought I needed but the tech at yahoo says no!

If I click onto yahoo mail I have IE and can format my email with colors and backgrounds and fonts, BUT if I click onto the big red Y in yahoo I am in FireFOX and THEN the mail does not have any way of getting different fonts, colors or background color!!!!!

BTW you all are the GREATEST
! You help me more with this computer stuf than techs do! THANKS!

Sounds like a browser settings issue.

As for your other question:
Are you on DSL on a single computer, or did they install external modem and a router/hub?

If you have a router, it should have it's own firewall.
Fairly certain you can request it from your provider if you don't.

The problem with Zone Alarm is that it blocks a lot of necessay packets from reaching your machine.

Sorry, I know it doesn't help much, but I'm on a LAN on cable.

I bought Zone Alarm for my anti-virus & firewall. I had a huge problem with it until I called their tech service & learned how to set it for my personal usage. It works great now but it may be a different version than what you are using. I have had Yahoo DSL for a year with no problems. I like it. I switch between their browser & IE. I have a fairly new computer running XP...that makes the difference I think. Good Luck

I have a little black box with 4 lights on it that my computer is attached to for the DSL. DSL is only for my home computer.

NOW I really goofed up! I deleted firefox as I wanted the colors and fonts and with firefox this site was only WHITE, and now I cannot get into Yahoo except for through my yahoo mail as my computer is still lookiing for firefox! <sigh>

I don't use IE, but I'm not going to delete it because I don't want to mess things up.

I use Outlook express for my email, perhaps you could try that?!

But when you post here, can you see colors and formats or is everything white?
