GEORGE is about 9 weeks old and we've had him about 3 weeks now. He was pulled from his mother during the first few weeks and tossed on the side of the highway with his sister. They were found by a cyclist and were quarantined and nursed to health and we graciously accepted him as our own. About 2 weeks ago he started sucking like crazy because he feels safe and secure. The only problem is that he does it every time he starts purring, usually when is getting sleepy. I don't mind the paw kneeding so much, but the sucking on the neck and face can be quite excessive. I'm concerned that this will turn into a life-time habit and I'd like to try and ween him off sucking on people. The paw kneeding can stay. I loved everyone's pictures and thought I'd submit my own for your enjoyment. Everyone... meet GEORGE...

I have found with suckling kittens that getting them a snugglekittie works wonders. They generally transfer their suckling to the stuffie, and because it has a mechanical beating heart and a heat pack, it really does take the place of the momcat the little one misses. Thanks for rescuing this tiny one-
Bijou is over a year old and he still has to have a little suckle (and kneading) on my neck every night before he goes to sleep and yes, he purrs so loud I think the neighbours could hear him.
If that's what he needs to feel loved and secure I have no problem with it. I keep his claws clipped and he doesn't hurt my neck so no problem.

Do cats knead with their nails out? Scaredy is kneading on my leg with his nails out. At least that's what I think he is doing. Otherwise, he is just scratching my leg.
When they do knead, they flex their nails in and out as they go. They're not meaning to scratch or hurt, but it's a side effect sometimes. Just keep them trimmed and you'll be fine.
Our experience with suckling has been limited really to 2 of our young boys. When we got Isolero and Cala, Iso was constantly sucking on Cala's neck to the point of making a small skin lump behind her right ear. That eventually went away though. Now, Marzal, our youngest boy is sucking on Iso's belly now and then... We laugh considering it payback for Iso's habit
It doesn't seem permanent, as it's and off and on thing....
I wouldn't give it too much concern until it's gone on for 2 or 3 months, then something should be looked into.

i too can understand how you want to break george of his suckling habit, i also have a kitten(osiris) who does this I have noticed that he mostly does this at night i let him do it for a short time he usually falls asleep afterwards, and in time i also hope that he will grow out of it, i also have a 3yr old female that does this to my boyfriend
Bijou still does it after 1 1/2 yrs, but I must admit he does it less often, i.e., not every night any more.
