It dropped to Cat 2 before exiting Yucatan. Here is a definition of Cat 2 according to the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale:

Category Two Hurricane:
Winds 96-110 mph (83-95 kt or 154-177 km/hr). Storm surge generally 6-8 feet above normal. Some roofing material, door, and window damage of buildings. Considerable damage to shrubbery and trees with some trees blown down. Considerable damage to mobile homes, poorly constructed signs, and piers. Coastal and low-lying escape routes flood 2-4 hours before arrival of the hurricane center. Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings. Hurricane Bonnie of 1998 was a Category Two hurricane when it hit the North Carolina coast, while Hurricane Georges of 1998 was a Category Two Hurricane when it hit the Florida Keys and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
I'm guessing that (since Merida was at that point about 50 miles ssw of the eye) that Rigel had to deal with winds of around 90+mph. Still bad, but not as bad as it could have been.

Hopefully he has a well built house and was in a safe location when it went overhead.

Assuming one lives in a concrete building (As are most modern buildings in caribbean cities), in a place where you don't get any flooding, (MÃ[emoji]169[/emoji]rida is far inland) and knows the matter of hurricanes (as anyone born and bred in the tropics does), he will be safe. My main worry is the electricity... my experience of Hurricane Georges in 1998 was of three weeks without electricity and two weeks without water, which means it might be a while before he can contact us again.

On my search this morning for information about Emily and Merida, I found this article (originally in Spanish, and translated by Google). Another site, which calls itself the "Online Home of The Gringo Community of Merida, Yucatan" and offers news and information to that community and visitors, says, in part, "So far it looks like Merida may have dodged the bullet."

Hoping this means our friends are safe and no more than inconvenienced. Can't wait to see you post, Rigel, my friend.
