What age do they start this usually? Is it the same as normal (around 8-9 mos), or is it earlier because other males are around? I've got a pair of boys. They, as well as the litter's only female, are scheduled to be fixed the day they turn 5 months. I will seperate her from them when she turns 4 months (vet advised to be abolutely sure they dont knock her up). is this age too late to avoid spraying/ agression?

Any helpful answers appreciated.

Sounds like a good plan - males usually begin to reach sexual maturity at around the age of 6 to 8 months and if there is an intact female who experiences estrus around, it can come on even earlier in some males. The sooner you can get your boys and girls altered, the better your chances of not having the boys become fire hoses. *wink*

Thank you. I was worrying my head off. 5 months is the earliest I can get it done here. The only other vet wanted to wait 8 months citing "development" for the males! I dont know what would develop besides spraying, fighting, and a strong urge to knock up everything within a ten mile radius. I'm all for a fire hose-free household.

Ha ha --- I think you know more about cats than that vet!!
Chances are you'll be all right at five months. Don't wait too much longer, though.

i know how you feel. my four month old male is huge and well developed but the vets wont neuter before 5 1/2 months.
