Does anyone know what is involved in pursuing a career in medical transcribing? Obviously, I would need training but I didn't know if there is a special degree that is required. If I would pursue this, I would want to work from home.

I work in a doctor's office, and all the transcribing is done in house. One lady is allowed to do some of the work from home, but she has worked there forever. MIL took some computer course to learn medical transcription work, but then never worked! And I know some offices are going to computer transcription, where you talk into the computer, and it types for you. (Too expensive for my office!) I'm not sure if there is a market for this anymore, or if there is, how long it will last.

Hopefully a transcriptionist will post and give you some better news!

Well...I'm from Canada and a Medical Transcriptionist. I know things are done differently in the US, but I could give you answers about the actual work, etc. I'm pretty sure you have to be licensed by the AAMT.
Here is the link!

Working from home isn't all it's cracked up to be, but if you work hard you can make some money......

Knowing how to spell medical terms is an important prerequisite. I reviewed my medical records once and was shocked at some of the spelling. Errors in your medical records could have serious negative health consequences.
