I have a perfect 5 year old tuxedo cat named Molson (hence the screen name).

He is quiet, only scratches his scratching post, and has only had one accident outside the litter box in the 5 years we have had him. We adopted him as a 4 month old rescue and he has been a very welcome addition to our family. He loves his mom and dad very much and sleeps at my feet every night, sees me off to work in the morning, and waits for me in the window when I come home.

I want to get another cat, preferably a kitten, to keep him company. My husband is on the road a lot and I am only home for several hours a day -- we're both really busy people and I'm worried Molson is lonely. I know he sleeps a lot and seems to like the fact he's the alpha in the house!

Does it make sense to get him a friend to keep him company? What experiences have you had with introducing kittens to perfect cats?

I don't want to ruin my perfect baby Molson.

T'would be a good idea, I think, to get your Molson some company. It would certainly provide him with entertainment, if nothing else! I don't think he'll have a problem, just be sure to introduce them slowly (I think there's a thread on here giving instructions for it).

P.S. Molson's name wouldn't possibly have come from the good ol' beer, would it? If so, COOL...I love Molson Canadian beer, too!

It's a good idea BUT you can never know before hand if they will be friends. Most cats learn to at least get along but might never love eachother. I just want you to be aware of this. That said, if he accepts the new cat they will have a great time. It is good for cats to have company

Don't get another cat ONLY because you think he needs company. Get another cat only if YOU want another cat.

That's a good point. If Moley's laid back and not that hyper a cat, I don't think you'll have a problem...especially if he's a neutered male. Males seem to be more acceptable of having a new friend around, so I would go for it.

you may want to consider getting a cat closer to molson's age. My friend brought a kitten into the house with an older cat and the kitten was just too energetic and ended up stressing the older cat out. I think the 2 cats need to be similar in energy levels or one cat ends up being endlessly tormented. Just a thought.

Getting a second cat was the best thing i ever did for my lucky. There is only a 5 month difference between the two of them though.
